Unmanned vehicles Waymo traveled more than 16 billion kilometers… but not on the ground

Practically there is no doubt that unmanned vehicles will sooner or later become one of the main types of transport. Many large companies, such as Uber or Yandex, does conduct tests of their versions of the autopilot. Not far behind them and Waymo, self-driving cars have already driven more than 16 billion kilometers. At first glance it’s just a huge number! But as they say, there is a caveat.

How is testing unmanned vehicles

According to representatives of the Waymo, at the moment its a test drones dashed more than 16 billion kilometers in a test virtual environment. What is it? It’s a special program to simulate a traffic situation. In it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, modeled a variety of traffic situations. The simulation is able to recreate any environment. From complex accidents to the dense traffic of large cities.

To date, the testing involved more than 25 thousand virtual car Waymo. All data received are for the improvement of control algorithms for the autopilot.

Self-driving cars have already left on the streets

But do not think that Waymo confined to tests in virtual reality. In fact, the company has real results to share. Although they are impressive not so much. Real drones during tests on real roads the USA has overcome a total distance of more than 16 million kilometers.

But if Autonomous cars successfully travel about on real roads, then why test them in a virtual environment? The answer to this question was given by the technical Director Waymo Dmitry Dolgov:

“At the moment in the US there are only a few places to test drones. And they are clearly not enough for training neural networks. The number of hours rolled on real and virtual road shows how well our system works. In the real world a lot of different possible situations on the road, all of which are simply impossible to simulate in testing live. When the system collects data from both sources, it becomes ready for any driving situation.”
