The world Steve jobs, and iBook

In 2000 Steve, breaking the tradition announced new computers and upgraded existing at MacWorld Expo in Tokyo (February 16, 2000) and in Paris (13 September 2000). All the updates iBook was announced outside the U.S. – I wonder why? Voluntary guardians of morality found in the “beauticians” threat to morality? I do not think that such events would go past the journalists, and information about such troubles I have never found.

Steve tired to speak in San Francisco and in new York, or wanted to explore (at the company’s expense) all over the world? Hardly. He could easily go out for blood, especially since even in 1997 and 1998, the most stressful time, he made multiple visits to Japan, incognito. To eat dinner of acne in one small restaurant. So…

Most likely, this was some other meaning, and upgrades iBook was announced in Tokyo and Paris on simple coincidence. At MacWorld Tokyo, the main dish was the PowerBook Pismo, but not bullet-proof cosmetic bags with retractable handles and no latch…

This is the third part of a series about the iBook, a list of the previous parts below:

First: Laptop candy style: iBook;
Second: iBook: “something else”.

The displeasure of the masses

iBook (native) is actively buying, and no less actively criticized. The size of it was more than “full” PowerBook G3 Lombard awful, agree! Although no one promised, not a single hint that a household notebook needs to be more compact than a laptop for serious use. And the design, especially the colors, “for adolescent girls” was the most marketable topic for small talk about anything…

There were allegations that iBook is impossible to travel. My friends went with two “purses” blueberry (Blueberry) colors on the planet, within two years, they just didn’t complain (and I’m envious – would be so shook at public expense!!!), but iBook’and never. Not failed even once. If not for my previous MacBook Pro, I wouldn’t even believe that it happens. Happen.

Was serious criticism.

The possibility of changing the iBook to your taste was severely limited. The user has to access the RAM, AirPort Card and battery. Technically, no one was forbidden access to the hard disk (in order to see it, or even replace with more capacious – 3.2 GB in the second half of 1999 is not impressive), but it was necessary to Unscrew a 40 (forty!) screws.

However, the intensity of emotions lack of exibility of the iBook was the fifth or sixth place, behind even the completely frivolous to the critical assaults.

The most popular (I don’t know why) was the complaint… the tiny amount of RAM in the base configuration. 32 Megabytes soldered into the motherboard. Apple online store believed that this volume can be increased to 288 MB, which in those days no one would call a tiny amount. With memory chips, which Apple preferred not to inform, it can be increased up to 544. But… they All cost money and the cost of the basic configuration (1 $ 599) are not included.

The second was a complaint of too little hard disk space. 3.2 GB… And 40 screws towards its upgrade. Perhaps if I had the iBook, I would have joined this complaint. And true enough, and it seemed to change it was almost impossible. That’s just about the ability to upgrade… we have their problems.

But sales iBook was huge, and not only in the United States. In Japan and in Europe, they bought almost in large quantities. Could not update. But…

Tokyo iBook SE (samurai?)

Graphite in color he was… brave and beautiful. I recently saw preserved to our days iBook SE this release. Noble graphite has acquired a brownish tint, I would even call it pleasant. No frivolous coloring pages “girls”, he no longer resembled a purse.

But most importantly, like all shells, it was inside him: G3 overclocked to 366 MHz.

New name: iBook SE. Special Edition. New price: 1 799 dollars.

Despite these changes, the identifier of the model remains the same: PowerBook2,1.

But what about the mournful complaints? Disk, RAM, and all that?

Simultaneously with the release of the iBook SE updated gamut iBook. Now in the basic configuration was 64 Megabytes of RAM soldered to the motherboard and ATA-drive capacity of 6 GB. Accordingly, changed the limits of expansion RAM, up to 320 Megabytes (for version Apple and in the online store when purchasing), or 576 Megabytes, if your hands.

iBook SE was supplied in exactly the same configuration.

If increased sales then? I do not know. They were large, remained.

Complaints nadorster hard disk also did not stop. Only 6 Gigabytes!!!

Japan was chosen for the presentation of new models by Apple, because of the loyalty and devotion of the Japanese friends of the company. In Japan, I think, seen in the Apple something near and dear mysterious Japanese soul.

Paris upgrade

13 September 2000, at the opening of MacWorld Expo in Paris, for the first and last time in my life, was made by Steve jobs. France was one of the most loyal to the Apple countries in Europe, but Germany and the UK, she almost did not concede in this matter. Just the headquarters of Apple Europe was located (and, in my opinion, is still) in Paris.

Has changed (drastically) color scheme. The colors of the “girls” have sunk into oblivion. Now iBook was painted in dark blue and bright green (Lime) color. From past experiments with color preserved only the dark gray Graphite. I’m somewhat indifferent to the design but even to me these new colors seemed attractive then. Amazing: color really matters!

It was a new model (model ID PowerBook2,2), two variantah: Regular and SE. And with a new name: iBook (Firewire) and iBook SE (Firewire). The Paris iBooks adds support for Firewire 400, a port for connecting FireWire devices.

First used PowerPC 750 processor with a clock frequency 366 MHz iBook SE in from Tokyo. The second was the PowerPC 750 with a clock frequency of 466 MHz. If you believe Wikipedia and some other sources, the iBook SE September of 2000 were used PPC 750cxe, but according to IBM, the processor (codename Anaconda) was announced only in 2001, and was noticeably more powerful than the processor in this model iBook.

The investigation confirmed: the iBook SE/466 used PPC 750cx (main difference from “just 750” – second level cache inside the processor size of 256 K. the Cache is smaller, but the same CPU clock frequency, much more efficiently.

More powerful graphics: ATI Rage Mobility 2xAGP with 8 Megabytes of video memory.

In Regular – 24x CD-ROM, Special Edition, instead CD-ROM – 4x DVD-ROM.

64 Megabytes “soldered” RAM, hard disk of 10 GB.

It was the last upgrade “shells”. They waited for the metamorphosis. Shape change…
