The whole family…PowerBook G4 (Late 2003)

On 16 September 2003 was supposed to go down in history, but it did not happen. 15 years ago Apple was not yet an important element of the universe, and its news no one was interested. Sorry, to many questions the answers and failed to find. For example, I don’t know whether it was on this occasion organized the Apple Special Event, not to mention the venue. Was there this event Steve (already aware of their diagnosis), or someone else. All these details, of course, is not the most important, the essence is more important – and it’s all fine, but…

Rummaging through the search engines and directories I found out a lot of completely unnecessary about this day, Tuesday 16 September 2003 but did not see any mention of Apple.

In our days, even on less significant events associated with this company write all and Sundry, even in the most unexpected publications. Still, a company with a market capitalization of one trillion dollars, most-iPhone-iPad-Apple Watch and everything!

This is the fifth part of a series about a PowerBook G4, a list of the previous parts below:

First: PowerBook G4 titanium. Apple is trying to stand out…;
Second: a Titanic breakthrough in the background of the crisis of the industry;
Third: PowerBook G4: Titanium Thumbelina;
Fourth: The smallest and largest PowerBook G4.

Aluminum alloy…

As announced on 16 September 2003, the “family” consisted of a portable Mac and three models, one model was presented in two versions. The models differed from one another by screens and buildings. Somehow, most of the founders of the family were interested in the size of the screens to the diagonal model, called 12-, 15 – and 17-inch PowerBook G4 (Late 2003).

All PowerBook G4 (Late 2003) has been used one of the gorgeous modifications PowerPC-generation “four”, PPC 7447a. Technology 0.13 micron, three-layer substrate of “silicon-insulator-silicon”… Yet from Motorola (already engaged in granting of independence to the division for the development and production of microprocessors), but the trail IBM in the design of this processor is evident.

12-inch PowerBook G4 (with a diagonal of 30.7 cm) differed from its January predecessor type of connector to connect the display devices. Mini-VGA was superseded by the Mini-DVI. Therefore, the model was called the PowerBook G4 1.0 12” (DVI-Al). I’m not going to decode VGA, DVI, and Al.

The ID of the model PowerBook6,2 indicated that it belongs to the class “iBook’and special power”.

The 15-inch variants (“cheap” and “expensive”) were called PowerBook G4 1.0 15” (FW800-Al), and PowerBook G4 1.25 15” (FW800-Al). They supported FireWire 800 (Apple’s terminology), or IEEE-1394b-2002 (in the world).

I almost forgot: 15.0 inch is 38.1 cm ID model PowerBook5,2. 1.0 and 1.25 is the clock rate, in GHz.

The 17-inch model was a PowerBook G4 1.33 17” (Al). About “Al” also can be omitted previous 17-inch model was made from the same aluminum alloy.

ID 17-inch model “Late 2003” – PowerBook5,3.

PowerBook G4 1.0 12” (DVI-Al)

Case this model is no different from the case in January, the 12-inch PowerBook G4, and she is also the “smallest by volume of the laptop from Apple.” The record lasted until January 2008, when it beat the MacBook Air.

Processor frequency is 1 GHz, front bus – 133 MHz. Second level cache 512 K Cache in the third level were absent. 256 Megabytes of RAM included, which are soldered into the motherboard. The Bank of RAM one, its maximum volume – up to 1.25 Gigabytes.

Hard disk – 40 GB, UltraATA/100, 4 200 Rev/min Built-in Bluetooth 1.1, AirPort Extreme Ready.

NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 (4x AGP) with 32 MB of video memory.

Screen with a diagonal of 30.7 cm and a native resolution of 1024×768, supports 800×600 and 640×480. On an external monitor up to 1600×1200, support all modes.

2 USB 2.0, 1 FW400… thickness of 1.18 inches (2,997 cm, usually rounded up to 3 cm), weight 2.1 kg.

Depending on the type of optical drive (the old days back?), two options prices: configuration with 8x Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) – 1 $ 599 with 2 x SuperDrive (DVD RW/CD-RW) – 1 799 dollars. Both types of drive slot load.

Geekbench 2 – 458 points.

1.0 PowerBook G4/1.25 15” (FW800—Al)

The model (ID PowerBook5,2) existed in two versions, “expensive” and “cheap”.

Shared between the processor (clock frequency of different variants), because of this, the size of second level cache (on chip) are the same – 512 K Cache in the third level no.

The clock frequency of frontal system bus is also shared at 167 MHz.

In embodiments, used the same type of RAM (PC2700 DDR SDRAM), but
the amounts of memory that were included with the kit.

The same ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (4x AGP) with 64 MB of video memory.

Screen with 15-inch diagonal (38.1 cm), widescreen (3:2), with a native resolution of 1280х854. Supported “non-native” resolution as 3:2 and 4:3.

The external monitor support resolution up to 2048×1536, in all modes.

In both cases, one FW400 port and a FW800, 2 USB 2.0 ports. And built-in Bluetooth 1.1.

Shared housing (with a thickness of 1.1 inch or 2.8 cm) weight – 2.5 kg.

In the “cheap” version (with a clock frequency of 1.0 GHz) base RAM – 256 Megabytes (but any byte of them was not soldered to the motherboard).

Hard drive 60 GB, UltraATA/100, 4 200 R/min.

Optical drive – 8x Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW).

AirPort Extreme Ready (but the card must be purchased for an additional fee). Light sensor (Ambient light sensor) in the “cheap” option was absent.

Cost of “cheap” option 1 is $ 999, the Geekbench 2 – 542 points.

Clock frequency “expensive” option – 1,25 GHz.

The amount of RAM in the base set of “expensive” option – 512 MB. Disk 80 GB, UltraATA/100, 4 200 R/min.

Built-in AirPort Extreme, light sensor, 2-fold SuperDrive (DVD-RW/CD-RW).

Price – 2 $ 599 in Geekbench 2 – 658 points.

PowerBook G4 1.33 17” (FW800—Al)

The clock frequency of 1.33 GHz, the clock frequency of the front system bus (FSB) at 167 MHz. The second level cache is 512 K cache in the third level were absent.

With the exception of the screen diagonal (17.0 inch, or 43,18 cm) housing size (by the way, the thickness of the body 1 inch, or 2.54 cm is the thinnest computer in the family), weight 3.1 kg and higher clock frequency of the processor, otherwise the model is identical to the PowerBook G4 1.25 15” (FW800—Al).

Geekbench 2 – 688 points.

Price – 2 999 USD.

  1. I have been browsing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours It is pretty worth enough for me Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before

  2. I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good I do not know who you are but certainly you are going to a famous blogger if you are not already 😉 Cheers!

  3. Thanks for giving your ideas I would also like to mention that video games have been at any time evolving Modern technology and enhancements have made it simpler to create practical and interactive games Most of these entertainment video games were not really sensible when the real concept was being tried out Just like other kinds of electronics, video games too have had to develop by means of many many years This is testimony to the fast development of video games

  4. Thanks for the tips you have contributed here Something else I would like to express is that pc memory needs generally rise along with other improvements in the technological innovation For instance, if new generations of cpus are made in the market, there is certainly usually a corresponding increase in the dimensions preferences of all computer memory along with hard drive room This is because software program operated by means of these processor chips will inevitably surge in power to benefit from the new know-how
