To find out, they spent through the imaging of the 87 volunteers: they were divided into groups according to 29 people, among whom were patients with stress disorder, with depression and healthy people. The number of mGluR5 was calculated in five brain regions: in a couple of parts of the prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus.

As expected, the number of the above-mentioned receptor varies greatly depending on the mental state of the people. In patients with stress disorder receptors are highlighted in greater availability, and in the presence of suicidal thoughts they are really larger than in their absence.

Scientists are unable to explain the relationship between the number of receptors and the presence of suicidal thoughts, but they believe that this is a clear biological marker, which is able to save many lives. Based on this knowledge, scientists can develop drugs that act on this group of receptors and relieve the people from suicidal tendencies.
