The smallest and largest PowerBook G4

MacWorld Expo 2003. San Francisco. Summing up the last months (this time he didn’t have to painfully seek a cause for joy) and I opened the audience, desperately seeking a miracle, three computers, a flying saucer, a program and something else. As always, Steve was waiting for more… but, on reflection, agreed to consider his presentation informative and interesting. Rumors, one more fantastic than the other, appeared immediately after the announcement of Apple about its participation in MacWorld 2003 in San Francisco. The rumors peaked on the evening of 6 January, before the opening of the exhibition…

Steve, as always, a little late. He did not know one horrible news about himself, was cheerful, happy and full of energy. In a few months… But I will not write.

Some of the topics were not related to PowerBook’AMI. Safari and the new model PowerMac G4.

By itself, the “flying saucer” (AirPort Extreme Base Station WiFi router supporting 802.11 g from Apple) to PowerBook’am had no relationship but since the 7th of January 2003, all new AirPort Ready Macs supported 802.11 b and g (802.11 b/g), and a new model PowerBook G4 and PowerMac G4 were the first of them.

By the way, in Russian Wikipedia about AirPort Extreme written is not true: c WiFi-extremism Apple has not contacted in 2007, and in 2002, and the first version of the technical equipment for this purpose was presented to the public on 7 January 2003. However, in the English wiki, though obviously not written about 2007, but it’s in the article vaguely – the cause of the error is obvious.

Steve presented to the audience by FireWire 800. This IEEE-1394b-2002, the technology developed by Apple in 1986-1992, and competitor USB. The number 800 is the designation for the data transfer speed of 800 Megabits per second. In fact, the maximum speed of data transmission in the IEEE-1394b-2002 was 786,432 Megabits per second.

And two models of PowerBook G4, sparkling aluminum alloy, which is so fond of Jonathan Ive as it turned out. And this combination, oddly enough, better scratch-resistant than titanium. Not a miracle? And now, almost 16 years…

This is the fourth part of a series about a PowerBook G4, a list of the previous parts below:

First: PowerBook G4 titanium. Apple is trying to stand out…;
Second: a Titanic breakthrough in the background of the crisis of the industry;
Third: PowerBook G4: Titanium Thumbelina;

PowerBook G4-class “powerful iBook”, oddities

Steve called it “the smallest PowerBook’ω for all their history”. Immediately they began to argue scholars of all models and configurations, caught Steve’s not in deception of the public, not in a bad knowledge of “the materiel”. If the PowerBook Duo 210was produced from 19 October 1992 to 21 October 1993, was even smaller.

What if check? The dimensions of the PowerBook Duo 210, in inches: 3,6х27,7х21,6. And the PowerBook G4 with a diagonal of 12.1 inch and also in centimeters: 3,0х27,7х21,9. By volume, PowerBook G4 12” (1 819,89 cubic centimeters) and in fact less than Duo 210 (2 153,95 cubic centimeters).

But in General, pay tribute to the erudition of the writing fraternity: they do not count, but the memory of them is excellent. These two computers are very close in size. And, since we remembered Duo 210, that cost 2 $ 250. Thus, apart from the dock it was not really a full computer…

Have a PowerBook G4 with a diagonal of 12.1 inch sample January 7, 2003 model ID… unusual: PowerBook6,1. ID PowerBook6,3 was the very first model of iBook G4 Late 2003. PowerBook6,5 – iBook G4 (Early 2004).

PowerBook6,2 and PowerBook6,4 also have – and they are all PowerBook’and with a screen of 12.1 inch.

To PowerBook6,1 PowerBook’s the first digit in the model ID was odd, and iBook’s – on the contrary. This is a special class PowerBook’s, which are almost the iBook. The first in this class was considered a 12-inch PowerBook G4.

PowerBook G4-class “powerful iBook” technical details

The model was out of options. Or, if you prefer, the option was only one.

The PowerPC 7455 processor with a clock frequency of 867 MHz and a frequency of the front bus at 133 MHz. Despite the support of this modification of the PowerPC cache is the third level in this model, it was not. Size did not.

But this model weighed 2.1 kg. PowerBook Duo 210 of 1992 was easier – 1.9 kg.

In the basic configuration is 256 MB of RAM. The chips are “adults” as all PowerBook G4 PC2100 DDR SDRAM. But… in the iBook, 128 MB of RAM soldered to the motherboard. And only one memory Bank occupied by the chip of 128 MB. That is, as recommended in the reviews, it is better, in our online shop, choose this place is the largest of the available memory volume of 512 MB.

However, for PowerBook’and, in the era of “big cats” (Mac OS X), 600 Megabytes – not too much… But tolerable. Out of an online store, even then, you could buy PC2100 DDR SDRAM capacity 1 GB, compatible with a single Bank of memory and the strange PowerBook’. Here, the chip of 128 MB will have to be put somewhere, the only question is where.

Graphics card – NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go (4x AGP) with 32 MB of video memory.

Screen resolution 12.1 inches diagonally (30.7 cm) – 1024×768. Native. Like the iBook. In addition to the native supported resolution of 800×600 and 640×480.

But Bluetooth 1.1 built in.

Geekbench 2 – 441 score. Price – 1 779$. In spite of our malice about this model of PowerBook, it is quite a capable computer, with a full set of communications connectors… But FireWire 800 is not supported.

PowerBook G4 17-inch screen

One more model without.

PowerPC 7455 with a clock frequency of 1.0 GHz, and with a clock frequency of the front bus – 167 Megabytes. In this model, the first time, implemented a ambient light sensor (ambient light sensor), depending on the light level and the user preferences governing the backlight and screen brightness.

The second level cache on chip, 256 K. the tertiary Cache size of 1 Megabyte. Two banks of RAM (PC2700 DDR SDRAM), in the basic configuration one of them is busy with the chip in volume of 512 Mbytes. The second Bank can be filled with the purchase, the same chip (chip of greater volume in the online store).

Two PC2700 DDR SDRAM capacity 1 GB (which was not difficult to buy, and which installed without problems) brought the RAM up to 2 Gigabytes, it is for most “big cats”.

The drive capacity of 60 GB, with a speed of 4 200 Rev/min, but UltraATA/100.

NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go (4x AGP) with 64 MB of video memory.

External screen: resolution up to 2048×1536, both modes including the expansion mode desktop space.

All the usual communication connectors: 2 USB 1.1, 1 FireWire 400, 1 FireWire 800, etc. GB Ethrenet. A 2x SuperDrive (DVD-RW/CD-RW). The slowest DVD burner was twice as fast, being the slowest…

Built-in Bluetooth 1.1 and AirPort Extreme (WiFi 802.11 b/g).

Expansion slot PC Card type I and II.

Even according to the promises of Apple, the period of Autonomous operation of the largest PowerBook G4 was only 4.5 hours. Weight – 3.1 kg. its size and configuration could be more. The thickness of the body of aluminum alloy 1 inch. 2,54 see

The model ID is typically PowerBook’ovsky, PowerBook5,1.

In the Geekbench 2 tests, the model scored 576 points.

And should all 3 is $ 299.

The real “Colonel”, I mean computer…
