The robot FEDOR again no luck, this time in space

Space Agency NASA has long been trying to teach the robot to help astronauts perform routine tasks on the International space station. Russia also wants to keep up with their foreign colleagues and in 2014 began the development of humanoid robots, FEDOR (Skybot F-850). First, the robot could not get inside the spacecraft “Soyuz MS-14”, but engineers research and production Association (NPO) “Android technology” was able to put it in a capsule and send to the ISS. The launch took place on 22 August, but the robot still did not get inside the station because the ship couldn’t dock. It seems that a series of failures of the robot FEDOR continue.

Russian robot BORIS

For docking of the spacecraft with the station used a system of rapprochement “Course”, which has operated since 1986, but is constantly improving. Apparently, to perfection, it is still far — ship “Soyuz MS-14” failed to identify correctly the signs on the surface of the station so docking had to be postponed. It is reported that the first time you try docking the unit was close to the station is 96 feet, but then withdrew from it to a safe 280-meter distance.

The vehicle docking with the ISS

The next attempt of docking will be done on August 27, in 6 hours 12 minutes in the morning. This time the ship with the robot FEDOR tries to make a docking with the service module “Zvezda”, which is another Russian segment of the space station. He became a part of 26 July 2000 and in the early stages of construction of the ISS served as a means of livelihood other modules. Over time, this task was taken and that’s good — now he can entertain a humanoid robot.

Representatives of “Roscosmos” hope “Soyuz MS-14” will remain docked to the ISS for 12 days. He then landed on the Ground with FEDOR robot.

However, if we consider that the robot FEDOR always failed, mating may not take place. Fuel spacecraft “Soyuz MS-14” should be enough for about a year, but only on the condition that he docked to the station. While in space, he uses a lot of energy, so the fuel may be exhausted in a week. Corporation “Roscosmos” will attempt until the very end, but if the dock is not going to happen, space ship “Soyuz MS-14” will have to return to Earth, where he will sink in the ocean.

What can a robot FEDOR?

In this case, the robot FEDOR will not be able to save, but it costs as much as 300 million rubles. According to representatives of the NGO “Android technology”, the mechanism is equipped with 48 engines 32 of them are Russian. It must be impressive, but am interested in another question — why all this to brag, if the robot is almost can not do anything? While NASA robots are able to climb Martian mountains to look for minerals, robot FEDOR is not even able to move independently — it is controlled through a remote.

They say that robots will become assistants in exploration of the moon

I hope that the spacecraft “Soyuz MS-14” will still be able to dock with the station. It is reported that Russian cosmonauts will test its system in space flight conditions. If everything goes smoothly, in the future the robot will be able to perform tasks in dangerous for astronauts conditions. For example, to repair the equipment under conditions with high levels of cosmic radiation.

So far, we only saw how he sends messages to his official Twitter. And even then, it was later revealed that instead, it makes the person to discuss the unusual method of PR “Roscosmos” in our Telegram chat.
