“The godfathers of artificial intelligence” was awarded the Turing award from

The Turing award from 2018, known as the “Nobel prize in computer science”, was awarded to three scientists who laid the foundations of the current boom in artificial intelligence. By Joshua Bengio, Jeffrey Hinton and Yang Lecun — which is sometimes called the “godfathers of AI” — was awarded a prize of $ 1 million for its work on the development of deep learning in AI. The method developed by this trio in the 90-ies and 2000-ies, allowed a huge breakthrough in such tasks as computer vision and speech recognition.

Their work is the basis of modern artificial intelligence technologies, from driverless cars to automated medical diagnostics.

Who created artificial intelligence?

You can say that you’ve probably interacted with the descendants of algorithms Bengio, Hinton and Lacuna today — whether it’s a facial recognition system which unlocks your phone or linguistic artificial intelligence to help you write texts and emails.

Since all three occupied a prominent place in the ecosystem of research on AI, covering academic and industrial circles. Hinton works at Google and the University of Toronto; Bengio — Professor of the University of Montreal and founder of Element AI; Lecun chief specialist in artificial intelligence at Facebook and Professor at new York University.

“It’s a big part,” said Lecun. “Well that is happening in the field of Informatics. And even better that I can share it with my friends, Joshua and Jeff”.

Jeff Dean, senior specialist AI at Google, praised the achievements of the Trinity of scientists. “Deep neural networks responsible for some of the greatest achievements in modern computer science,” said Dean. “The basis of this progress lie the fundamental methods developed by the laureates of the Turing award this year, Joshua Bengio, Jeff Hinton and Jan Lacuna”.
