The first tests of a new contraceptive pill for men has been successful

Scientists for years looking for an effective means of contraception for men, which can be a safe alternative to condoms. Different research groups have proposed various gels, injections and pills, but they actually turned out to be ineffective, and in most cases dangerous to health. Finished today at the annual conference of the Endocrine society (ENDO 2019) scientists from the University of Washington made a report, which reported a successful clinical trial of a new contraceptive drug for men. As stated by the authors, the drug can be considered safe. Description of the development and research is contained in a recent article in JCEM.

The working title of the drug to 11-beta-MNTDC, which stands for 11-beta-methyl-19-nortestosterone-17-beta-dodecacarbonyl. Its verification was conducted with the participation of 40 male volunteers. Thirty of them were given a drug, the remaining ten or a placebo. The study was conducted for 28 days. The drug 11-beta-MNTDC was carried out once a day with food. Accepted dose ranged from 200 to 400 milligrams.

Preparation of 11-beta-MNTDC contains a form of progesterone: a steroid hormone which blocks the production of luteinizing hormones (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Both are needed for sperm production. To simultaneously compensate for the decrease in male hormones, the tool also contains androgens (steroid male hormones produced by the sex glands). The presence in the drug of androgens, according to scientists, allows to keep various signs of masculinity: hair, deep voice, sex drive and muscle mass.

The study notes that those who took the drug 11-beta-MNTDC, significantly decreased the level of luteinizing hormones (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Check for a control group taking a placebo, have confirmed these results. At the same time, scientists say that the main objective of the study was not to test the effectiveness of the drug and its safety. At the end of the experiment, the scientists learned from the following volunteers: five inform about changes in libido, weak two experienced erectile dysfunction, in addition, some volunteers noted weakness and headaches. However, preparations based on hormones, food intake usually leads to more serious side effects, researchers announced volunteers characterize the effects as moderate.

Despite promising results, the researchers say that this is only the beginning of research and preparation 11-beta-MNTDC. Currently, the scientists plan to conduct research aimed specifically at measuring the level of sperm production, which may take at least three months. In addition, the researchers intend to compare the efficiency of 11-beta-MNTDC functionally the same drug under the name of dimethadione undecanoate (DMAU).

Depending on what will be the results of these studies will depend on how soon the commercial version of hormonal contraceptive for men will be able to appear on the market. As a safe period scientists call for about 10 years. Sounds long, but scientists want to ensure not only complete safety of the drug, but his effectiveness in the reduction of sperm production to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
