Star Trek “Enterprise” – System 7 returns home

Interesting to fantasize about the battle System 7 (with NetWare and Digital Research DOS on Board) with Windows NT developed by former professionals DEC under the flag of Microsoft, because the reality was nothing like that. Star Trek from Apple, Novell, and Intel have not entered the market. Never.

But still I wonder how it would look, and someone who “would have eaten”, in the end.

The combat version of System 7 for Intel, was scheduled for the end of 1993 or beginning of 1994. But then Apple changed direction, System 7 had to move to another platform, PowerPC, and abundant financial flow, feeding in previous years fancy Apple suddenly began to dry up.

Cancun, Mexico

18 of developers went to Apple and paid Novell a resort on the evening of 4 December, almost immediately after the presentation. Fred Monroe woke up when the plane was already landing in Granpuerto, in the East of the Peninsula Yucatan and in most Eastern point of Mexico, on the Gulf of Mexico.

Everything was top notch: the sea of free tequila, sun, beach volleyball and sleep enough. Two weeks passed like one day, but almost from the beginning the team again and again was going somewhere in a bar, and made plans for further development of the system.

The plan was enormous. If they were all implemented, Microsoft would be torn to pieces. The success of the project was not to hurt Apple, the developers, even though it was not part of their job, and thought about it. Their happiness that they didn’t know what was waiting for them the project in the very near future.

Suggests a code name for the new system – Star Trek “Enterprise”, because the system obviously was not intended for broad public consumption. Mac and main source of income Apple would benefit from this – considered developers.

Last day of vacation, especially at the edge, where white sand and clear blue sea, ordinary people, the most sad and unfortunate. As a file like. But not Trekkies – they rushed to their 486-m to make history.

On their return they were waiting for the first of the unpleasant surprises, soon fell on their heads from the horn of plenty.

Technical project lead, Roger Heinen left Apple Computer, Microsoft, for a very large salary. Lured. Afraid?

Then to the office in Santa Clara came Michael Spindler, Deputy head of the company on organization (COO), who hasn’t said anything bad, but all the Trekkies seem to have had some foreboding. Spindler something did not finish.

How was organized the Star Trek

System 7 running on computers with Intel? This is true, but not all. In fact, everything was much more complex and interesting Trekkies fried your side under the tropical sun Yucatana absolutely deserved.

Star Trek was built over a non-trivial layer of software from Digital Research and Novell. The basis of this layer was an alloy from recycled DR DOS 6.0 and DOS Palm 1.0 “Merlin” from Novell (in fact, inside NetWare System 7).

Block Novell DR DOS “Panther” provide 100% compatibility with 16-bit MS DOS (Star Trek could perform programs for MS-DOS and even MS Windows would have to buy Microsoft separately).

Integrated in this layer the DR DOS “Vladivar”, apparently the last development of the Gary Kildall, the whole 32-bit operating system without graphical interface (as Darwin macOS, iOS, and other modern Apple systems), built-in Star Trek would become one of the most advanced operating systems of the time, which was implemented preemptive multitasking, secure virtual memory, and all the things for which Apple Computer were killed in 1996-97.

Star Trek was compatible with the source codes of programs for the Mac, and incompatible with its executable code. That is, the program is copied from the Mac to work in Star Trek could not. But the developer of the program, without any problems, to be able to compile your creation for Star Trek.

Developers would have to buy computers with Intel compilers, but if Star Trek came on the market, it all paid off in a jiffy. Besides, Apple and Intel without any problems could ease developers life by selling them everything they need with great discount and even for free. The system was met not only with the inevitable strong opposition from Microsoft, but a strong tailwind.

The software for the new system would have appeared quickly and abundantly. And then, she very soon would come out of programs using the capabilities, and the crisis of 1996 simply would not exist.

Had to lick the system and to organize a massive invasion (at the level of heads of large and influential companies it was real). The only thing that was not done.

The road to Calvary and initiative

In February Trekkies subdued David Nagel, the head of the group advanced technology, was transferred to the main company campus in Cupertino.

Command Trekkies increased to 50 people, but instead of continuing development they wrote technical specifications, development plans of the various modules and white papers on various issues.

After the resignation of John sculley became very sad. Scully and Heinen have supported and defended the project, he was now completely defenseless, and the company was in the power of other Hobbies.

However, almost secretly and clandestinely, Trekkies gathered the alpha version, which was not AppleTalk (networking technology from Apple), QuickTime and some other parts of System 7, but can operate in the absence of the authors of the system and give an idea about its capabilities.

Spindler without objection, signed the permission for a group of employees of marketing Department to negotiate on behalf of the company with third-party firms about Star Trek.

Often he signed all the documents were on his Desk without even reading them – sometimes it’s the right approach.

In search of a supplier of hardware for Star Trek negotiators went to companies producing clones of the IBM PC. There were many, they were confident that they will succeed.

The first was a Dell.

Michael Dell system liked. It was evident that he impressed, but you put it on the computers of his company, he flatly refused. Because Dell’s contract with IBM and Microsoft, allowing to produce and sell clones. Under the agreement, the company is obliged to pay to install MS DOS on every computer sold, regardless of whether the system is installed or not.

To pay these money for nothing, he will not.

A similar agreement was all manufacturers of PC-shnyh clones, to pay Apple, no one was going.

Apple to develop Mac and Intel wasn’t going to, she had other, ambitious and promising plans. The company put on the PowerPC architecture pre-announced killer Intel.

The efforts of the negotiators came to nothing. Manufacturers of PC clones the terms of their agreements with Microsoft was unhappy, but to kill its core business for the sake of pie in the sky, they were not going. Some of them even complained to the judiciary (they have already met with representatives of Digital Research, offering instead his MS DOS, DR DOS, surpassing Microsoft ovsky in order), but…

Complaints were not successful: the contract was signed voluntarily, they never got pushed into it, they sought its conclusion, they trained the staff, at its own expense, the staff have passed Microsoft exams and received certificates – no catch!

When the court still found something to complain about, and recognized the actions of Microsoft are illegal, for many projects and companies it was too late. They died.

The ATG (advanced technology group), 1993, Spindler has allocated $ 20 million. Almost all the money was focused on the project of system migration to PowerPC, which had the highest priority.

On Star Trek money is not enough. Trekkies were the enthusiasts, almost fanatics, but to work for “so” they agreed.

In June 1993 the project, which cost Apple a hundred million dollars, was closed.

Think about Star Trek when he was gone

In the second half of 1993, when Apple already forgotten about Star Trek, the computer press was still discussing the galactic aspirations of Apple. Of course. the slogan was immediately altered it: “Mac boldly go where all have been”. Still, Intel has been not all, but sounds nice.

The usual whining of those who hate Apple, this time, it was closer to the truth than the hopes of her fans. De, nothing will come of it, can’t Apple create something worthwhile.

Known in the industry the son of a female dog origin (son of a bitch) Stewart Alsop Third, journalist and major media Mogul shared his thoughts about the ongoing in the world war user interfaces, praised the interface of System 7, putting her in 3 of the 4 categories the highest score. According to him, in late 93 or early 94, with the advent of System 7 on a powerful PC-shnyh workstations, everything can change.

Stuart Alsop now 70 years old, but he still play tricks. In 2016, he returned to Elon musk Tesla, with a polite (almost without the Mat) explaining why, and that, in response to unkind words and criticism were forbidden to sell Stewart any products of any of his companies generally and for all. In my opinion, this has never and with anybody was not. An outstanding person.

Results Star Trek

With the conquest of other galaxies from Apple didn’t work out. His other project, the Pink turned into Taligent object-oriented operating system, the company “gave” IBM, which is also abandoned. I saw Taligent, system interested me as a programmer, it for such as I had been promised Paradise…

But the demonstration of Paradise I was not inspired. And not only me. It was a very powerful and interesting project, but alas, completely raw. Buried many of the ideas in it in our days implemented and successful, but Taligent to their reincarnation nothing had. The project cost Apple nearly half a billion dollars.

The fate of former Trekkies have developed differently. Some are still working at Apple when he closed the Star Trek they moved on to other projects in the transition to PowerPC, and then they kept up to date Marklar, a variant of Mac OS X for Intel.

Two Fred of Trekkies, Fred Monroe and Fred Haxton, was founded in the San Francisco company Fredlabs, and do what he likes. Their most famous development is the Virtual Mac for the BeOS. BeOS also prematurely died. Steve came to the conclusion that there are two systems on Apple hardware guarantee failure, and blocked Be Inc the oxygen. Installing BeOS on a Mac and became impossible.

A year and ten days after the beginning of development on Star Trek, and a month after it closed, on July 27, 1993 Microsoft released Windows NT 3.1, an operating system of the new generation. A worthy opponent, the new system is not met, Novell quickly began to lose market share and, eventually, ceased to play a major role in the industry. She gave a battle, it was a fierce battle, but the “forces of evil” in the end, won.

More, as far as I know, to Apple for help in a difficult situation not addressed no one. When the company was drowning in 1996, no one came to her rescue, except Microsoft.

Emulators Macs with 68k (Mini vMac, Basilisk and others) and PowerPC (SheepShaver) written with the participation of ex-Trekkies.

In the group of advanced technologies of Apple in late 1993 started a tiny number of participants and size of funding the project RAPTOR, the aim of which once again became a “modern operating system”. Projects Copland and Gershwin, though, came out of him. Don’t know the “sources” of these projects and without him was not less than a dozen.

That’s all…
