Scientists have renewed the search for gravitational waves with advanced detectors

In 2017, the founders of laser-interferometric gravitational-wave Observatory LIGO was awarded the Nobel prize. It was given to them for the detection of gravitational waves, which are formed by the collision of two massive celestial objects like black holes and neutron stars. During the first two cycles of their search was recorded waves, formed from the merger of two black holes and nine such events. Since then, researchers have improved their equipment, and from 1 April 2019 are going to run a third cycle of the search.

In the discovery of new gravitational wave Observatory LIGO will help the Virgo detector, located in Italy and owned by the European gravitational Observatory (EGO). Only in one of the LIGO project involved 1300 scientists from hundreds of institutions from different countries. Russia was represented by two groups of scientists: one from the physical faculty of Moscow state University named after Lomonosov and the other from the Institute of applied physics RAS.

In recent years, researchers from both gravitational-wave observatories has greatly improved their detectors. For example, they doubled the power of lasers for interferometers and significantly improved five out of eight 40 kg mirrors of the LIGO detectors. During the first cycles of search for oscillations of the flow of photons in the interferometer encountered quantum noise — this problem was eliminated by using compression techniques of the world.

Thanks to the totality of the improvements, the capacity of the detectors was increased by as much as 40%. It is believed that on the third loop search, they will be able to register more gravitational waves due to the increase in the visible region of space.
