PowerBook G4: Titanium Thumbelina

Must be nice to be a troublemaker in the industry, forcing competitors again and again to fend off the craziness. Looks like they couldn’t live without it. And not only they: now fans, every time they were waiting for a miracle…And miracles, according to his adoring fans, is no longer happening.

While iBook’and won the domestic segment of portable computers (we have a few of them got carried away), a portable Mac and a titanium hulls played the role of icebreakers. Over and over again they became the best in the industry, forcing competitors to strain to catch up, but Apple fans often seemed that their favorite company “betraying the revolution”.

However, the volume of sales is the frustration of not affected. On the contrary. Sales and market share grew. Slower than I wanted – but has grown. Familiar?

In fact, the main task of joint stock companies is to make money. It is for them as breathing. But…

We stayed for PowerBook G4 “Gigabit Ethernet”, published October 16, 2001.

The next model PowerBook G4 was introduced to the public a little more than six months later, on 29 April 2002. And after half a year, on 6 November 2002, another. About these two models, I and will tell today.

This is the third part of a series about a PowerBook G4, a list of the previous parts below:
First: PowerBook G4 titanium. Apple is trying to stand out…;
Second: a Titanic breakthrough in the crisis industry.

PowerBook G4 (DVI)

DVI (Digital Video Interface) – standard interface for transmitting images over a digital device, developed by a consortium DDWG (Digital Display Working Group) in 1999 with a noble aim to simplify connecting monitors to computers and other devices.

Over time, this standard gave way to others – but officially he’s still not cancelled.

New PowerBook G4 support this standard, but this fact was not their only difference from the previous models.

In the PowerBook G4 (DVI) used a PowerPC 7451 processor belonging to the second generation G4 (G4e or G4+), with code name “Apollo 6” (in honor of the spacecraft Apollo 6), among other things, allowing acceleration to higher clock frequencies, with the second level cache on the chip and supports an external cache of the third level.

The second level cache, placed on the chip, 256Kb. The tertiary cache is 1 Megabyte.

The clock frequency of the front bus (FSB) – 133 MHz.

The graphics card was more advanced than PowerBook G4 “Gigabit Ethernet”, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (4x AGP) with 32 MB of video memory.

Else if differed from previous models, it is not radical.

Widescreen display with a diagonal of 15.2 inches (38,6) with a “native” resolution in 1280х854, with support for several other resolutions, both with a ratio of 3 to 2, or widescreen (1152х768, 896х600 and 720×480), and with the ratio of 4 to 3 (1024×768, 800×600 and 640×480).

The external display (mirror mode and extension mode of the working space) supported resolution up to 2048×1536.

Instead of 6-fold Combo-drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) – 8x Combo.

2 USB ports (1.1) and 1 port FireWire 400. Single-slot PC Card type I and II.

AirPort Ready (that is, the AirPort card is purchased for an additional fee).

The identifier of the model – austere and surprises – PowerBook3,4. The former PowerBook3,3.

And, as it turned out this is the most important: thickness of 1 inch (2.54 cm), weight 2.4 kg.

Options PowerBook G4 (DVI)

Options (initial configuration in the online Apple store) had two. Expensive and cheap. After the iBook, the last definition I want to write in quotes – “cheap”.

The processor in the cheaper option (for 2 $ 499) was overclocked to 667 MHz, amount of RAM, the default is 256 MB (PC133 SDRAM) in one of the two banks. The maximum amount of RAM – 1 GB (2 chips of 512 Megabytes).

Included – hard drive 30 GB, with a speed of 4 200 Rev/min One of the two typical troubles of portable computers slow drives…

But this is, after all, the Apple: as an option in the online store offered a drive capacity of 60 GB, promoted to fantastic 5 400 rpm. seriously, this drive was faster – but it still drives desktop computers he was far away.

Geekbench 2 cheapest option gained 413 points. A year and a half, the cheapest “budget” version of the iBook G4 scored 435. But in April 2002 it was hoo.

Expensive option the processor has been overclocked to 800 MHz, the amount of included RAM is the same type of 512 Megabytes, and hard disk 40 GB 4 200 rpm. And the same disk 60 GB 5 400 rpm as options.

Geekbench 2 expensive option scored 467 points, and the cost is 3 $ 199.

PowerBook G4 (Late 2002)

As in the title, only the date, without any epithets, it’s a minor update?

Judge for yourself.

This is the first PowerBook to use the PowerPC 7455, one of the best fourth generation PowerPC. Large clock, of architectural improvements over previous versions of the processor…

The second level cache, placed on the chip, 256Kb. The tertiary cache is 1 Megabyte. The clock frequency of the front bus (FSB) – 133 MHz. All the same?

No. New and more efficient video card, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 (4x AGP). The amount of video memory will be reported in the description of the options: he is different. Still, this was not.

The type of the optical disc drive different options.

The ID of the model PowerBook3,5. I can’t believe that the head of the company – a poet.

Other technical data are almost the same as that PowerBook3,5.

Options PowerBook G4 (Late 2002)

In the cheaper option, with a clock frequency of the processor is 867 MHz, video memory 32 MB. The type of optical disc drive – 8x Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW).

In Geekbench 2 the cheapest option is “knocked out” 505 points, and the cost is 2 $ 299. In Russia and in Eitri is turned to about 2 700 (including import duties and transport).

Processor frequency in an expensive option – 1 GHz, video memory 64MB, and the type of optical disc drive – 1 times the SuperDrive (DVD-RW/CD-RW). Rejoice not only for the ancestors: SuperDrive wrote DVDs the slowest in the industry. But the Apple did not write about it.

Geekbench 2 – 556 points, price – 2 999 USD. For “expensive” PowerBook G4 quite cheaply.

Goodbye, Titan…

It was the last model of the PowerBook titanium. Studies have shown that most customers are almost indifferent to the material of the computer case, if it is strong, light and beautiful.

Therefore, since the next model PowerBook G4, Apple no longer overpaid nor Titan, nor for its processing. Surely the cost of one G4 PowerBook savings were cheap, but given the millions of copies of the products…
