Plans to merge Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp

Newspaper The New York Times shared the plans of Mark Zuckerberg, which relate to the deep integration of Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. It is a complete rewriting of software code of all three messengers with the aim of unifying backend and use end-to-end encryption. For the end user this means the ability to securely send messages to other users between three different services. For example, you will be no problem to send a message from Instagram user WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Facebook is planning to implement the feature by the end of 2019 or early 2020. This process is technically complex and will require the efforts of thousands of employees. Currently, end-to-end encryption supports WhatsApp, so this move undoubtedly will have a positive impact on the security of all messengers of the company.

Why do we need Facebook?

The company earns on Instagram and WhatsApp don’t have much money. The unification of the backend and better integration of services will allow Facebook to attract more users. For example, in South America, the popular WhatsApp and in some other country can use only Instagram. To contact someone from this country to South America will not have to log in Facebook Messenger.

By the way, it could push the company to run Facebook Marketplace, similar to the Craiglist (the most popular trading platform in the United States, by analogy with Avito in Russia). WhatsApp users will be able to buy goods from people using FB Messenger, for example.

These plans Mark Zuckerberg, not all happy. When WhatsApp and Instagram went “under the wing” of Facebook, their founders insisted that would not combine all three businesses. Not so long ago Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, founders of Instagram, has left the company after increased pressure from Zuckerberg, for the same reasons Facebook left and the founders of WhatsApp.

7 December, Zuckerberg brought together employees of WhatsApp, so they can ask him questions. A lot of workers invited to the microphone, but the answers Zuckerberg seemed to them vague. According to sources, a few employees WhatsApp has decided to leave the company after the change of vector of development, which was started by the head of Facebook.

Arise and questions. How the company will be able to integrate all three service, if Facebook Messenger and Instagram require real user data, and WhatsApp – only a phone number?

Of course, while the situation is unclear until the end, and who knows how it will turn out in the future, but obviously we can expect a new experience of interaction between services Facebook. And it can not but rejoice.
