Opinion: Why Apple needs to keep the Lightning connector in the iPhone

The year 2020 promises to be rich in technological innovations. Among the most awaited products of next year, stands out the new range of iPhone. According to rumors, the company is preparing a lot of changes and global redesign. Many reputable publications also predict a transition to a common standard Type-C. Why is that bad? We will try to understand this material.

Recently connector Type-C was used throughout. They are equipped with many laptops (such as Apple refused from the USB to A MacBook Pro in 2016), most Androidsmart phones (including devices mid and budget segment) and even tablet computers from Apple — starting with the line in 2018.

Not far off the moment when Apple will abandon the usual Lightning in favor of USB type-C and iPhone. Universal port for all problems — what could be better? But actually, the cause for joy a little bit. And I’ll explain why.

My experience shows that Type-C is a completely unreliable and flimsy connector. But about all under the order.

Low durability

The catch is that the first time Type-C shows himself just fine. The cable is securely fixed in the connector and is retained perfectly in the device. This was the first month of using the MacBook Pro 2017.

But the USB-C port began to deteriorate: first lost a “click”, responsible for the fixation, and after a time weakened, and the bracket itself. Cable literally became a “wobble” in the connector. While I have always used the original cable and inserted it gently. Marriage is excluded: a similar situation occurred with the second port and with other devices on the USB-C.

In these moments I remember about magnetic MagSafe connector. This connector does not lose its properties over time: cable “cling” to the device automatically, and the connection was always stable. And the option of an emergency shutdown were very topic: laptop stayed in its place, if the wire is accidentally severed.

The lack of latches

One of the main advantages of the port of Lightning — special locking bumpers. It is not excluded that thanks to them, I never had any problems with this connector. For some unknown reason, the clips used in Type-C. In my opinion, this is a significant blunder of engineers.

Failure

Users of foreign forums almost unanimously speak about the low reliability of Type-C. after 2-3 years of usage, many have the same problem: connector stops working suddenly While the failure may be partial: the port ceases to be usable for charging, however it still can be used for data transmission.

Alternative To Type-C

Is there any alternative to USB-C? Of course. Apple could provide an enhanced Lightning 2.0, which would be deprived of all the structural deficiencies in Type-C. otherwise, besides the tearing of the cables supplied, we get more flimsy and unreliable connectors in the iPhone. And we need it? I’m afraid not.
