Samsung Electronics is preparing to begin production of processors, made for 7-nm process technology. This publication reports ZDNet, citing official representatives of the vendor. The transition to a more complex manufacturing process will provide branded chipsets Samsung higher performance with significantly reduced energy consumption and will enable them to make substantial competition to the decisions of market players like Apple and Huawei.

According to the confirmed information, to start production of 7-nanometer processors Samsung Electronics will allow the technology ultraviolet lithography (EUV), a new generation, developed by engineers of the company for the past ten years, but had never used in the production of semiconductors. The same technology will form the basis of 5G modems from Qualcomm, mass production of which the American manufacturer plans to start before the end of this year.

What good is a 7-nanometer processors

7-nanometer chipsets Samsung have 20% higher performance and 50% more energy efficient compared with current generation solutions, using 10-nm process technology. But if the performance of the modern smartphones is clearly no shortage of twenty percent, the increase is unlikely to be noticeable by the vast majority of users, the extra few hours of battery life they would not have damaged.

First manufacturer in the world, which managed to establish commercial production of processors, made for 7-nm process technology, TSMC began producing “stones” at Apple. As shown, the transition to more advanced process technology has enabled the manufacturer to reduce the battery capacity of the iPhone XS in comparison with iPhone X, keeping the same level of autonomy with high levels of computing power and advanced AI and augmented reality.
