New method of water purification: as boiling, but much better

In most cases drinking water without prior filtration and treatment it is impossible — it may contain hazardous microbes. Ways to get rid of them are numerous: from boiling and chlorination, to disinfect under the ultraviolet light, but researchers from the University of New South Wales introduced another option that is easier, cheaper and simply more interesting to others. They believe that to disinfect the water, you can just swipe through her hot bubbles with carbon dioxide.

The researchers propose to heat carbon dioxide to a predetermined temperature to release hot water, the bubbles could destroy the virus with their “hot” walls. As the experiment showed, for the creation of such bubbles can be used and common air, but pure carbon dioxide showed a higher level of efficiency.

In the experiment, the researchers purified water to which was added the bacteria Escherichia coli and bacteriophage MS2. Using different tanks, scientists have heated gas and air to a temperature of from 7 to 205 degrees Celsius. As predicted by scientists, the ability of the bubbles to kill the bacteria increased in proportion to the temperature. The best result was achieved at a temperature of 205 degrees, when using pure carbon dioxide.

It is noteworthy that the transmittance of the bubbles does not affect the temperature of the water, and she remains near 55 degrees. The main advantage of this method is low cost because of heating of the gas requires less energy than the water. Also it is very simple when compared with UV treatment.

A small test setup for a new method of cleaning has been tested on the pig farm, and showed good results.
