MacBook Pro Retina, 2012: absolutely new and unknown

When Apple ceases to respond to the superiority of competitors in areas where it recently was not equal fear! Again they were up to something, that something will be impossible to resist, but he will have to pay dearly, money (which come and go) and something even more important… MacBook Pro with the screen resolution which was again the best in the world, was a very great and powerful MacBook Air. In 2008, Steve said that “the future of notebooks”, and only now it became clear that he put in these words. He never lied. Wrong sometimes wrong – but never lied.

It is the dream of Steve jobs embodied in aircraft-grade aluminum, plastic and a couple of hundred grams of electronic components. Suicidal courageous decisions. Surely this time they all get away with it? And it has gone!

From a technical point of view, if you forget about the screen with the highest resolution (220 pixels per inch, laptops this has not happened) and several less well known but very notable innovations (glossy screen, which almost does not reflect), about a set of jacks (the dramatically unusual), transcendent slim body (You haven’t forgotten about all of this is necessary for a few moments to forget?) – it is absolutely the same computer that was released at the same time a classic MacBook Pro with the same screen size.

Same CPU’s, same graphics, same type of RAM, same keyboard (with minimal changes). Those who were sure that rMBP (Retina MacBook Pro) has incredible power and performance, were wrong. On the contrary, it is a much larger part this power was used “for other purposes”, although what it is “purpose”?

This is the nineteenth part of the series about the MacBook Pro, the previous part of the series here:

Break off with the past

The body of the first non-classical MacBook Pro looked even more elegant than the Air, or is it just me? My opinion doesn’t matter. Elegance, like beauty and other defy rational analysis of matter depends on who is looking.

The connectors are neatly arranged on either side of the keyboard is something. And set: two USB 3.0 (compatible with USB 2.0), two ports Thunderbolt, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 2, HDMI (first time on a MacBook Pro!), connector for headphones and… and everything!

Connectors:

Impressive. All very off topic, but stop: where is the Ethernet and Firewire? Where a drive for floppy disks, optical drive and hard drives. In the past.

As usual, Apple showed humanity: adapters for connecting Ethermet and Firewire via the Thunderbolt was included in the list of available accessories, at $ 30 apiece. And about the shareholders ‘ interests are not forgotten, well done.

But it’s the outside “break”. Inside clean and undisguised extremism.

Modernization is impossible

The computer is not the designer for children of middle age, is a household device, even if the “Pro” in its title says otherwise. Get it to perform some specific tasks, for communication with the outside world and for entertainment. He needs to do it all well, preferably perfect.

To make it as effective Retina MacBook Pro (rMBP) from standard components uses intact only those that cannot be modified.

All optimized, customized “in place”, perfectly balanced and coordinated, like a supersonic jet fighter or a Formula 1 car. Use and enjoy. But everything in this world has a flip side.

The amount of RAM you can select in the online store, the official (and real) its maximum of 16 GB. Collectors soldered the amount of memory in the motherboard with the back of her hand – and it will be forever.

For mounting the battery to the body is no longer used clever cogs, instead they are glued to the body. On the shell of the battery a warning: “to Serve only at authorized service centers Apple. WARNING: Risk of fire or burns if handled incorrectly. Do not remove, do not disassemble, puncture, drop, crush or expose to fire or temperatures above 100 ° C”.

Extreme from iFixit’s separated the battery from the housing, remove it and accepted written warning with every word.

It does not list all hazards: between the shell and the glued battery is the cable connecting the touchpad with a computer that is easily damaged.

… Wonderful, unique, and practically disposable. In the home can not be repaired.

Officially, “SSD” (actually, it sets the flash memory on a separate Board) is also impossible to upgrade. Special screws are tricky – but if you have experience and screwdriver with the correct tip is not a problem. Third-party proposals appeared in August 2012. Package except the card with the memory module included the response and detailed instructions.

The rest of the upgrade is likely impossible.

Technical data

They are mainly one-to-one the same as the“classic” MacBook Pro released in one day with them.

But there are differences.

The model ID all rMBP – MacBookPro10,1. The 15-inch “classic” – MacBookPro9,1.

Officially rMBP supports installing more RAM, but really all the “classics”, even the 13-inch working with the same 16 Gigabytes.

In the online store model was represented by two primary configurations: Intel Core i7 2.3 GHz (i7-3615QM) and Intel Core i7 2.6 GHz (i7-3720QM). In the Configurator you can choose Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz (i7-3820QM). The cost of replacing the processor and the details here.

A set of “non-SSD” offered in the online store – perhaps the most important difference. SSD themselves and others. More efficient, with a very good speed of writing and reading.

In the variant with 2.3 GHz installed SSD volume of 256 GB. Initially, no options to increase the amount of storage proposed. Since August 2012, barely appeared on the market third-party deals, the Configurator offered two options to upgrade (at purchase): volume of 512 and 768 Gigabytes in 500 and 1000 dollars.

In the version with 2.6 GHz by default installed SSD of 512 GB. From the very beginning it was possible to replace the SSD 768 GB, paying $ 500.

But the future was just beginning.
