MacBook Pro (Mid 2014): good but not enough

July 29, 2014 updated the entire MacBook Pro lineup. Like all the updates since the beginning of this year, it was also insignificant. Something like this has happened, in the most epic moments of history. And epicheskie too. What will the future bring? To speed bump’Oh, there’s nothing criminal. Good becomes a little better, and is either the same or even a little less. On 29 July it all was. Want something such, of course – but those who just need a laptop to fulfill specific desires were satisfied. And those who just bought the 2013 model is not too upset.

All the more reason to change something, by and large, was not. Competitors surpassed the MacBook Pro on a variety of parameters. For example, resolution 13-inch screen, the Samsung Book 9 Plus was 3200х1800 pixels. 13-inch MacBook Pro, it was 2560 x 1600. If you remember that the eye ceases to distinguish pixels (at a working distance from the screen) at 200-220 dpi, superiority is meaningless.

In addition, the laptops from Apple are now too many know firsthand, including their mysterious and almost inexplicable “something” in Apple did not have to worry. Their previous lineup was still very good.

Tuesday, July 29, online-shop

If the MacBook Pro was not reported in the section “what’s new”, nobody would understand what has changed. From time to time the online store was closed for a couple of hours for some reason which buyers know it was not allowed.

A slight increase of the clock frequency change is not limited, but it affected all models.

Design 13-inch models in recent times has changed (they were thinner) in October previous 2013, less than 9 months ago. The architecture has been improved at the same time – and even Henry Ford said that “serviceable vehicle is not repaired”.

And, lo and behold, the tests showed that the new MacBook Pro is superior to each of its ancestor, but not much. Performance and even, in some tests, operation time on one battery charge.

Before the release of Yosemite (Mac OS 10.10) with its Orgy of transparency and ghostly video effects were a few months – probably something in the newborn twirled to them nothing happened. The capacity of batteries has not changed.

13-inch MacBook Pro 2014

In the online store, still, the initial configuration was three.

1 299, 1 1 499 and 799 dollars. The first two differed only by the amount of flash memory, first it was 128 GB, the second 256 Gigabytes. These volumes were final and were not subject to replacement. Well that laptops from Apple was very popular, and in the vast world of non-replacement drives changed drives, larger capacity, cheap and without any risk.

All of the processors mentioned below – 2-core Haswell, economical, produced on 22 nm technology, modern and up to date as of 29 July 2014. They are all tightly vpisalis into the motherboard and cannot replace them.

In models 1 299 and $ 499 1 used Intel Core i5 2.6 GHz (i5-4278U), cache third level 3 MB, able to accelerate to Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.1 GHz. Like their counterparts in 2013, in their Configurator was also the option of replacing the processor. Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz (i5-4308U) with the same third level cache and turbo frequency of 3.3 GHz for $ 100. On the Intel Core i7 3.0 GHz (i5-4578U) with 4 MB cache in the third level and the turbo frequency of 3.5 GHz, for $ 300.

Part of the same initial configurations 2013 included 4 GB PC3-12800 (1,600 MHz) DDR3L SDRAM. Now 8 Gigabytes of RAM of the same type. For $ 200 its size can be increased to 16 Gigabytes, while ordering and never again – the memory was vpisalas into the motherboard.

In the composition of the initial configuration in 1 799 was $ Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz (i5-4308U), for $ 200 it can be replaced by Intel Core i7 3.0 GHz (i5-4578U), and flash memory of 512 Gigabytes, which for $ 500 could increase to 1 Terabyte. In the same configuration in 2013, it consisted of 8 GB PC3-12800 (1,600 MHz) DDR3L SDRAM, the size of which $ 200 could be increased up to 16 Gigabytes – at the time of checkout and never.

The identifier of the model remains the same: MacBookPro11,1.

15-inch MacBook Pro 2014

As before, the initial configuration was two. All of the processors in the 15-inch MacBook Pro 4-core, Haswell, 22 nm technology. They were also soldered into the motherboard. But had no problems with the choice of processor for upgrade: replacement impossible.

First with integrated graphics – Intel Iris Pro 5200 with 128 MB of its own VRAM Crystalwell, which is used for their needs and more shared RAM, according to Apple 1.5 Gigabytes, according to Intel – 1,0. In fact, for most operations were in use even more shared memory than 1.5 GB.

Processor – Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz (i7-4770HQ) with 6 MB cache in the third level, the maximum clock frequency of 3.7 GHz.

As part of the configuration – 16 GB PC3-12800 (1,600 MHz) DDR3L SDRAM, its size cannot be changed even at the time of ordering. Memory vpaulus, it was forever. The ID of the model MacBookPro11,2.

Cost this configuration 2 099$.

In the second graph were combined. For operations not requiring a graphics over-capacity was used integrated graphics, Intel Iris Pro 5200 with 128 MB of video memory Crystalwell. For particularly demanding on graphical power of the tasks used discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5.

Processor – Intel Core i7 2.5 GHz (i7-4870HQ) with 6 MB cache in the third level, the maximum clock frequency of 3.7 GHz, and the same 16 GB PC3-12800 (1,600 MHz) DDR3L SDRAM, on the same terms. The ID of the model MacBookPro11,3.

This configuration cost 2 $ 499, $ 100 cheaper than a similar configuration sample 2013.

In any of these configurations for $ 200 copayment, the processor could be replaced by a more powerful Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz (i7-4980HQ), cache third level 6 MB, turbo frequency at 4.0 GHz.
