MacBook Pro c Intel Core i9. Is it worth overpaying?

In the middle of this year Apple introduced the updated MacBook Pro. For the first time to buy steel configurations available with processors Intel Core i9 on Board. Today it is the fastest mobile solution on the market. Journalists Ai decided to find out how advisable to buy such a configuration. To do this, they took a MacBook Pro with a Intel Core i9 and a model equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor and compared them with each other.

To measure the performance of notebooks was decided in synthetic tests. The tests involved the following configuration:

  • MacBook Pro 15 (2018) Intel Core i9-8950HK on Board and 32 GB of RAM;
  • MacBook Pro 15 (2018) Intel Core i7-8850H on Board and 16 GB of RAM.

Note that both versions use the 6-core processors that can work simultaneously 12 flows. First, the journalists tested the laptops in the renowned performance test Cinebench R15. Here’s what happened:

  • The result of Intel Core i9-8950HK (average clock speed was 3.15 GHz) — 1011 points;
  • The result Intel Core i7-8850H (average clock frequency amounted to 3.1 GHz) — 1001 points.

Then was launched the corporate benchmark GeekBench:

Intel Core i9-8950HK:

The single-core test — 5675

Multi-core test 25650

Intel Core i7-8850H:

The single-core test — 5105

Multi-core test — 23552

Surprisingly, the difference in performance in synthetic benchmarks was not so big. Perhaps Intel Core i9 will perform better in real use scenarios?

To obtain objective results, it was decided to test the laptops in tasks.

5K rendering a small project in Final Cut Pro: both models coped over the same time — 48 seconds.

Export 99 42 MP RAW images in Lightroom: a model with Intel Core i7 processor solved this problem in 5 minutes and 48 seconds, and the version with i9 for 5 minutes, 50 seconds.

Rendering a large project with a professional camera RED Raven: here, the results proved most controversial — MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9 quickly got heated and started dropping the frequency. In the Junior version of heat was not so noticeable, and the CPU was all the time on one level, which she managed to win this test.

Summing up, the journalists came to the conclusion that the configuration c Intel Core i9 does not justify itself. The difference in the actual tasks was minimal, can not be said about the difference in cost. What is particularly interesting is the version with the more efficient processor proved to be more vulnerable to heating, and as a result, the throttle.
