Mac mini: the secret announcement…

That in the line of Intel Mac mini have been changes, almost no one wrote nothing. Those who did this (a few days or even weeks), started their texts with “Oh, we forgot” – and no wonder. Apple has announced changes to the Mac mini on 6 September 2006, and immediately drowned out the news of what we speak not now…

Good, by the way, the idea is: let’s say you want to keep secret, but the circumstances leave you no choice not to say it does not work – align the story about his secret with something visually stunning (not necessarily true), from which students will poluchitsa reason and disappear the shore…

And nobody will remember anything. Probably. I can’t guarantee. In our case, about it still someone remembered, and having come to himself, did not remain silent.

I do not think, however, that Apple did it on purpose. It happened. Figuring what and how will come of this, I decided that the side effects can be ignored, big trouble because they will not – but an upgrade is ripe, in August-September-October was appointed to a very important event… Overripe upgrade would be worthless, perishable goods.

Happened this permutation isn’t great… About the event itself, and few people remember, but looking in the online store in search of a very small and cheap Mac, hundreds of thousands of potential buyers were pleasantly surprised. And some of their number, is not going to buy anything until, suddenly poked a finger at the “buy” button, and another Mac mini has found a home and owner.

It was not just an update. It was a hybrid, combined with the relocation. But, unlike some other hybrid “entity”, from him no one was worse…

This is the fourth part series about the Mac mini, previous here:

The first part: Major debut 2005: headless Mac;
Second part: In not listed (Mac mini Late 2005);
Part three: Mac mini, Solo and Duo.

Top secret, after the publication of all to burn…

Of privacy, albeit imperfect, tells another fact: this update was not released even to the press release. Not that it was the first time something that looks vaguely recall, and it happened also with Mac mini. Not all children like the same…

If you have not forgotten the first Mac mini Intel Core called a Mac mini Solo and Duo, and they were on the 1 and 2-nuclear processor with clock frequencies of 1.5 and 1.66 GHz. Each option had its own name.

On 6 September it was done. Mac mini Solo has gone down in history. In its place, the youngest of the Mac mini, with a price of $ 599, was appointed by former Mac mini Duo, in the configuration that has been deteriorating. No malice: only to reduce its cost.

Impairments there were two: drive in the 80 GB was replaced by the same volume of 60 (both with 5 400 rpm SATA c 1.5 Gigabit/sec), and 2.4-fold DL SuperDrive replaced at 8x, only Combo. Both of the deterioration of the borrowed Solo.

There is also a new version of the model MacMini1,1 – it turns out that Infinite Loop (which in those days were the campus and the headquarters of Apple) and really worked on the new Mac mini!

Why “really”?

In the second half of August 2006, from an unknown source (but on several sites) appeared rumor: Apple preparing to release new Mac mini.

This time the hit was “so-so”: if Apple is going to release the Mac mini in 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo. The processor was announced in late July, talked about it, some journalists have reported that a 64-bit processor inside the new Mac Pro (and Xserve) – this is it. Actually used a Xeon, though based on the same Core architecture, but still another brand.

Why would Apple move to Intel Core 2 with the little Macs in the world? But it is because of this: that no one guessed.

The new Mac mini was the same 32-bit Intel Core Duo, on the right was another option MacMini1,1.

However, to say that the rumor didn’t guess – it is impossible. The debut of the new 64-bit Core 2 was held on the same day came the Mac mini. Just not in it.

The new Mac mini

Now, the former “senior” demoted and appointed “Junior”. If Macs have a soul (I’ve met people who are confident that this is so), a story for the sentimental prose…

The new senior was Intel Core Duo c clock frequency of 1.83 GHz (T2500). The drive capacity of 80 GB (5 400 rpm SATA c 1.5 Gigabit/sec), and 2.4-fold DL SuperDrive slot load. In the online store offered, for a very affordable fee, disks with similar characteristics amounts to 120 and 160 Gigabytes.

And what does “a 2.4-fold”? This means (for a CD unit of frequency equal to 150 KB/s for DVD – 1.4 MB/s), optical drive:

— writes DVD+R DL at a speed of up to 2.4 units;
— writes DVD+R and DVD-R at up to 8 units;
writes to DVD±RW at speeds up to 4 units;
— reads all types of DVD speeds of up to 8 units;
— writes CD-R at speeds up to 24 units;
— writes CD-RW at speeds up to 16 units;
— reads all types of CD speeds of up to 24 units.

In the previous “senior” had a 2.4-fold SL SuperDrive, one-sided.

The rest – the same configuration that of the “younger” with a clock frequency of 1.66 GHz: it’s not like this revision spent a lot of time.

The second level cache 2 MB, clock speed front bus – 667 MHz RAM included in the basic kit – 512 M memory type PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM, 667 MHz, RAM can be increased up to 2 Gigabytes in the Apple online store, and “spatula with a knitting needle” (independently) too.

Integrated graphics (Intel GMA 950) uses 64 Megabytes total of memory. Not enough for fans of cool games or for professionals – but for any daily needs is sufficient. Up to 1920×1200 (16:10) 20-inch Apple Cinema 23-inch Apple Cinema HD, and similar third-party monitors.

And one more thing… Compare that performance of the former older version and the new senior. As a common denominator (so that the comparison makes sense) using Geekbench 2.

Former senior option gained 2153 points, a new senior – 2217. Performance above 3%. The new senior option, as befits a senior, worth 799$.
