iOS 7: Beautiful terrible interface

Afraid of their desires: in the list of “what I would like” each new version of iOS, almost since 2008, was attended by radical changes to the user interface. This in the end happened. In iOS 7. The famous German writer (whose name I can’t remember, sorry) in 1935 wrote: “before Hitler, we were good with him, we got better, but it would be even better if we was again just okay.”

10 Jun 2013 the new version of the system has shown to fall into the hands of ungrateful consumers, it was only in the autumn. And for the first time in the history of the system reaction to the show was mixed. Mostly not too positive.

The new interface was not the only novelty in the system in the presentation at WWDC Craig Federighi and eddy cue talked about some of them – but the user interface has overshadowed all other changes.

By the way, Craig now oversaw the development of all software company.

And Jonathan Ive, probably the best industrial designer in the world, for the first time took over the UI design. Thoughtfully and confidently, based on the concepts of turning “iron” from Apple in a mass follow.

Craig Federighi and OS X developers found convincing arguments and was able to defend its interface from radical changes. IOS developers, having lost “his” Forstall failed. Dozens of key iOS-nicks is gone, having signed undertaking “not to disclose” because of disagreement with the decisions.

Other simplicity…

At first glance, it was pretty simple: Quince innate desire for simplicity and conciseness. Almost everything that was developed in his group (with excruciating thoroughness chosen from thousands of applicants) and became a role model, follow these aspirations.

And as head of all design at Apple, he just extended the same principles to the interface of the mobile operating system, not seeing any essential difference between industrial design and user interface design.

But it at first glance. For a second everything was a little different and more complicated.

Flat and simple design of interfaces has become almost the main trend in the early 10 years of the new century. It was called “pragmatic”, and justified theoretically, and brought its laws: the main thing is the content, the controls should not stand out on the background, to distract attention from it.

Most likely, widespread “pragmatic” interface was not the theory that most practicing designers have not even heard, and the usual, and understandable, reluctance to bother with unnecessary complications.

Mobile division Microsoft chose this style following the theory intelligently.

Ive, becoming senior Vice President of Apple’s design (for all types of design!), before something to break in the new field, not just studied these theories, which he carefully studied, consulted with theorists, someone even took in the Apple.

In my opinion, if he just spread his usual approaches to a new region, and include intuition tried to bring it to a Shine, the result would be, at least, not worse.

Horror, iOS 7

In iOS 6 was a real kindergarten: images of objects from the real world, plenty of chrome, textures, simulated 3-dimension (protruding controls, the visible compared to other parts of the interface as something almost tangible), imitation leather and precious wood.

In iOS 7 to replace all that came in 2-dimensional space, with abstract pictures on the icons built-in apps (part of which has no connection with the appointment of these applications), the controls are as if drawn with a pencil, but even this was not the worst.

A very important for the user actions starts or gestures (which are new to this interface could only have been a miracle), or from the secret menu (the secrets that seem specifically hidden from the user).

The same gestures had different meanings depending on which part of the screen or a specific interface they were used. For example, excellent innovation Control Center since iOS 7, incidentally, obscures my screen. I understand this is done to ensure that controls did not distract my attention from what I was doing at this moment.

In Safari (and other apps) controls shamefully hiding as soon as the program understands that the user started reading the content.

The area in which the moving down thumb up starts scrolling, borders the area in which this gesture displays the Control Center. Neither the area nor the border between them, not graphically highlighted in any way.

This is only a small part of the absurdities. In fact, in today’s text we are only talking about the first presentation of the new version of iOS, the most interesting began on September 18 when it came out, which we’ll talk about another time.

Almost all who have used iOS, dreamed of a radical change in its interface, it actually remained virtually the same for more than five years. Dreams came true.

The interface of iOS 7, according to some critics, was even more kindergarten than the interface of iOS 6.

But the interface of iOS 7 has not been definitely terrible. And the system itself.

About the beautiful

The system interface and standard built-in apps have changed and not always for the better, but to call it flat, in fact, wrong. The translucency (how it relates to the “sense of context” I did not understand, but it is mysterious, sometimes even beautiful, and when does not stop to perceive reality – even harmless), parallax (app icons react to changing device orientation – very practical!).

But that’s not it. Used as a system font Helvetica Neue is not only good looking, he is also less tired eyes.

Those who use the system every day to get used to iOS 7 for a week or two. Those who met her for the first time, I was in a desperate situation (information about the system, detailing all of her secrets, should be included in the system), but they do it quickly passed. Somebody showed them the right tricks.

Then the system was easy, clear and predictable.

For the “flat” interface, by itself, get used up even faster. And many he did and just liked it. He was given a standing ovation.

Craig Federighi promised the release of the system in autumn. It was released on September 18.
