Intel Optane Memory H10 — new Intel drives that are not what you think

What Optane? Initially, it drives the Intel on a brand new type of memory — 3D XPoint.

These SSD are both pluses and minuses, but a high cost initially did not allow such drives to become very popular. And now they are still very niche, though it has the usual.

Recently Intel has presented, as she calls it, the memory Optane DC — sort of a hybrid of SSD and RAM, but still only for servers. Now Optane H10 Memory.

To clarify, these drives were nominally introduced in January, but now Intel has announced their full, albeit without prices.

Only here it is not those Optane that we’re used to seeing. The point is that the basis of Memory lies H10 Optane regular NAND memory, and QLC. Yes, it is cheap, but that’s what she’s going to have a reliability issue.

Why Optane? Because the memory XPoint 3D here is still there, but it acts as a cache. Let’s read more. New items are SSDs format M. 2 2280-oriented consumers. There are three models: 256-GB, where the cache (i.e. memory 3D XPoint) only 16 GB, and 512 GB to 1TB where the cache 32 GB. The speed stated chic: 2400 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write. But performance is only 55 000 IOPS in random access. For comparison, stashnogo 860 Samsung EVO capacity is 90-100 thousand IOPS, and 970 EVO M. 2 — 450-500 thousand!

Resource, by the way, promise 300 TB. All decide the price. If it is relatively low, such SSD will be able to compete with M. 2 drives starting class, surpassing them in speed. If not, and the prospects of these innovations is very vague.
