Intel Low Power Display should enable the laptops to work for 4-8 hours longer

The technology is called Low Power Display and it was created in collaboration with Sharp and Innolux. On most Intel did not really told, but she helped to create the LCD display power consumption 1 W! And this is a normal Full HD panel.

Intel showed a laptop Dell XPS 13 with this panel and he allegedly worked in the mode of video display, almost 26 hours! However, its performance has not announced a figure of autonomy with the old panel is also unknown. But in General, Intel says the Low Power Display would allow to increase the autonomy for 4-8 hours, and that’s a lot. However, this will require that the laptop is based on Intel CPU, as the integrated Intel GPU is part of the technology Low Power Display.

But there is one problem. When I read the news about this technology, I have a question. I began to read other sources, but they all said the same thing. In the end, I found the full presentation Intel at Computex and revised. It turned out that there all the same thing.

And it consists in the fact that Intel, talking about Low Power Display, claims that she managed to reduce the power consumption of the LCD panel doubled from 2 watts to 1 watt. And I have two questions. First, I highly doubt that the typical 13-inch IPS panel with Full HD resolution even at medium brightness consumes only 2 watts. I was not able to find the exact data. Secondly, if to take Intel word at face value, it turns out some strange math. See for yourself. Intel managed to reduce power consumption of the panel by half. Cool? Yes, but in absolute terms it decreased from 2 to 1 watt. That is only 1 watt! They reduced the laptop’s power consumption of 1 W and claim that it is possible to add 4-8 hours of work?

Dell XPS 13 based on the Intel Core U with a TDP of 15 watts. Yes, when playing a video the CPU eats less, but let it be 10 watts. Throw in the power consumption of the chipset and motherboard in General, storage device, RAM, other components, speakers in the end. Not even at maximum load the laptop in General will eat 30-40 watts. And then they reduce power consumption by a single watt. One, Carl! How such a slight reduction of power consumption is 4 or even 8 hours of extra work? To me, this math seems very strange. I read some news on major Western resources, but none of the authors of the questions about such mathematics not arose.

In General, the promises about 4-8 hours of extra work — cool. A story about the power consumption of a typical notebook panels in 2W — controversial. Intel math when her own statements, mathematics of any other orders.

Well, unfortunately, it is not clear when to expect this technology in serial products.
