How to enable AirDrop between iPhone and old Mac

The Mac AirDrop introduced with OS X 10.7 Lion. In mobile devices it came with iOS 7, but only with the release of OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 data transfer earned between mobile devices and computer. But to work on the Mac AirDrop feature requires a modern chip wireless network, so on older computers to exchange data with mobile devices is impossible.

AirDrop does not work on all Mac computers

Since then, there has been a lot of updates, and many now would like to include AirDrop between your iPhone iOS 13 and old Mac. Standard operating system tools to configure this bundle will not work, but there are proven solutions from third-party developers.

A few years ago a group of enthusiastic developers created a tool called Continuity Activation Tool, which allows you to use the feature even on older Macs. Moreover, it activates not only Continuity, but also the exchange of data between computers and any iPhone via AirDrop. However, the old version of Continuity Activation Tool does not work with operating systems like Sierra or High Sierra.

How to enable AirDrop on your old Mac

Important! If you have a computer with macOS or newer Sierra, first restart the computer and go into recovery mode (Command+R). After you boot open a terminal and enter this command:

csrutil disable

Restart the computer in normal mode run the installer Continuity Activation Tool.

Download the installer at this link. After downloading, you must extract the ZIP archive, run the setup file and then follow the instructions.

All controls are numbers

The program then prompts you to restart the computer. Then in the General settings the Mac you will see the “Allow Handoff between this Mac and Your iCloud devices”, where you have to tick. You will also need to sign out of your iCloud account on the computer and log in again (on the iPhone nothing else to do).

Without this option it will not work

After the implementation of all these manipulations Continuity will have to earn that happily confirmed by numerous users. We also tested the performance of this method on a Mac mini 2011 on macOS High Sierra — became active not only Continuity, but AirDrop between Mac and iPhone with iOS 13.

Upon completion of all operations you can log back into recovery mode and enter this command:

csrutil enable

It works!

Why AirDrop to Mac not working

However, as we know, work Continuity, and AirDrop between Mac and iPhone prevent not only software but also hardware limitations. Therefore, before using the utility, check to see whether you need to install the necessary components on your Mac.

MacBook Air 2008-2010 — must install wireless card BCM94360CS2
MacBook Air mid-2011 — No additional components are not needed
Mac mini 2009-2010 — need a new wireless card
Mac mini mid-2011 — No additional components are not needed
MacBook Pro mid 2009 — late 2011 — Needed to install wireless card BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX
iMac 2008-2011 — Required upgrade of circuit boards Wi-Fi + Bluetooth
MacBook Pro late-2011 — installation Required wireless card BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX

Yes, MacBook Air and Mac mini mid 2011 does not require any hardware upgrades in order to force Continuity to work. It turns out that the restrictions imposed by Apple have a purely programmatic nature.
