How ships pollute the oceans?

Humanity today is actively engaged in not only the development of medicines against dangerous diseases and space exploration, but also environmental pollution. If the calculations of the ecologists are correct, every year in the oceans of our planet gets about 12.7 tonnes of plastic, with the greatest amount of debris deposited in water depths. Part of the plastic waste gets into water from land, but recently, scientists from South Africa and Canada have found that one of the largest sources of waste are the ships. But as the ships can pollute the water with plastic? Is this possible?

Plastic bottles decompose between 450 to 1000 years

It turns out that Yes. The researchers began to suspect back in 2009, during a visit to the island called Inaccessible in the North Atlantic. Environmentalists were shocked by the dirtiness of the island — on its surface, was discovered not less than 3 515 units of plastic waste like bottles and cans. Re-visit to the island in 2018 showed that the island has become even dirtier and the number of bottles and other wastes increased to 8 084 people.

The name of the island Inaccessible means "not available" because it is surrounded on all sides by cliffs. For a long time his nature has remained untouched — this is a popular place crested penguins. Now the cleanliness of the island is under threat, however, as the entire planet.

Pollution of the oceans

The island and its surrounding water began to be contaminated even in the XX century, as evidenced found on the coast of the plastic container, made in 1971. Many plastic bottles left of the label with the names of manufacturers, so scientists easily found that 75% of plastic waste was produced in China. As from the date of production of the most bottles of it hasn’t even been two years, researchers have suggested that the debris could not sail to the island to complete the journey from China to the island would require a minimum of 5 years. This means that the bottle was thrown from the ships.

This is also evidenced by the shape of the bottles — almost all of them were well tapered and tightly sealed lids. Usually ships plastic garbage do that it does not take up much space. According to African ornithologist Peter Ryan, the heads of the merchant ships should comply with the international agreement and not to throw waste overboard. The negative consequence of ignoring the rules can be seen now by visiting the North Atlantic.

The danger of plastic waste

Most likely, the ships not only pollute the North Atlantic, and the entire world ocean. Moreover, the abundance of debris is to blame not only merchant ships but also fishing boats. The fact is that with plastic bottles in water often found pieces of fishing nets that were carried away from their place of installation. Fish traps, by the way, today is also made of plastic in one of our materials, we’ve even attached a picture with tangled in fishing nets turtle.

According to Professor Peter Ryan, companies should pay attention to the problem of pollution of seas and oceans. Possible, increasing control over release of waste, the authorities of different countries will be able to slow down the pollution of the world ocean. But what to do with the waste that has already accumulated? The question remains open.
