How poor sleep leads to heart disease and death?

According to the world health organization, the reason for 31% of all deaths in the world are cardiovascular diseases. They develop in the wrong diet, Smoking, lack of exercise and irregular sleep mode. If scientists already know how food consumption, nicotine and a sedentary lifestyle affect the heart and blood vessels, the influence of irregular sleep still remained unexplored. However, the mystery has been solved, researchers from Harvard revealed unexpected chemical reaction linking poor sleep with heart disease.

In their study, the team decided to understand how lack of sleep leads to the development of one of the most frequent cardiovascular diseases — atherosclerosis. In the course of the disease in human arteries formed fatty plaques that hinder blood flow and lead to reduction of elasticity of blood vessels and inflammation. Subsequently encounter more serious problems such as seizures and stroke, which can cause death.

To identify a chain of chemical reactions linking poor sleep to cardiovascular disease, scientists conducted an experiment on mice. They were transferred to a diet with a high content of fat and divided into two groups, one of which was allowed to sleep and the other not. The researchers noticed that the carotid mice fatty plaque in the blood vessels are produced much faster and with greater intensity.

Chemical processes that lead to an accelerated clogging of blood vessels, were revealed later. According to scientists, it all starts with the malfunction of hypothalamus region of brain that is responsible for the regulation of sleep and produce the protein hypocretin. Insufficient sleep leads to lack this protein, and this increases the number of hormone called colony stimulating factor, accelerating the production of white blood cells. Leukocytes, in turn, lead to the formation of plaques in blood vessels and therefore to disease.

The researchers were surprised such a big role of hypocretins in the occurrence of fatal heart disease. For fun, they gave the mice supplements hypocretin, and their condition improved markedly. Of course, this may not work in the case of men, but scientists plan to conduct several studies and to give a precise answer.
