Flash red dwarfs can destroy the alien life

In 2014, scientists announced that red dwarfs — the most probable place of the existence of extraterrestrial life. We are talking about planets with a mass less then 20% of the size of the Sun that can sustain life on nearby planets. Recent studies by NASA bear the bad news perhaps life on these planets can disturb strongly the powerful ultraviolet rays from the dwarfs. However, astronomers have other suggestions that give an incentive to further the search for alien beings.

To study flares on the red dwarfs NASA uses the Hubble space telescope. Himself a research project called HAbitable Zones and M dwarf Activity (HAZMAT). In the framework of the Agency explores not only flash, but other activity on the surface of the dwarfs.

While the Sun and the Earth is at a relatively great distance from each other, located next to the red dwarfs planets should be located as close as possible to him. The fact that the dwarfs give much less heat than the Sun, and for the maintenance of life requires proximity of space objects.

Unfortunately, in that location lies a big problem. Red dwarfs arise ultraviolet flashes that are 100-1000 times more powerful than solar flares. They also happen too often — if the Sun was only a couple of strong flares in the history of the dwarfs they arise on a daily basis.

According to the head of the research project Park Loyd, such outbreaks can destroy the atmosphere of neighboring planets. However, he noted that this does not mean that the possible living organisms are doomed to die. It is likely that there are life forms that are resistant to such extreme weather. Also on planets may exist processes which continually regenerate the atmosphere.

The probability of the presence of life on red dwarfs is still high, as a lot of them. It is believed that they can be attributed to 70% of the stars in the universe, and with them probably circling habitable planet. It is also noteworthy that the dwarfs live for trillions of years.
