Brain tissue is able to function outside the body for almost a month

Scientists have created the newest technique that is able to keep brain tissue alive and functioning for 25 days. The technique, developed by scientists from Japan is based on the use of microfluidic substances in order to prevent drying of the tissue of the mouse brain. A new technique can be used not only to study tissue but also to improve technology for studying organogenesis.

Developed by Japanese scientists technique can help in pharmacology, increasing the amount of time to assess the result of action of various drugs on the brain of living organisms

Can the brain function outside the body?

The brain is a critical organ responsible for the activity of the whole living organism. The structure of the brain is a complex organ that consists of several types of fabrics interconnected by nerve fibers. Brain tissue is very difficult to research because of its complex structure, and despite improved methods of research and modern technologies, many processes occurring within the brain tissue, are still unknown to science.

Despite this fact, the scientists were able to make functioning brain tissue of mice, even outside of the body. If early scientists have experienced a lot of difficulties during the research due to the rapid vydyhaemoy and the death of tissue outside nutritious and hydrated culture medium, the experiment was able to show that brain cells can survive in very extreme conditions and circumstances.

During the research, scientists are usually able to extend the action of the nourishing environment just for 4-5 days, while the new method made it possible to extend the process up to 100 days

The newest way allows you to bypass most of the problems associated with transplantation of brain tissue, due to the device having a semi-permeable channel, which is covered with an artificial membrane, and also due to the special walls of the chemical substances used as antifoaming agent in pharmaceuticals. Thus, the tissues no longer need constant immersion, but at the same time they are powered from a moist nutrient medium that is circulated in the semipermeable channel and thus does not violate the natural gas exchange.
