Augmented reality in version Magic Leap — a revolution or another “passed”? Trying to understand in absentia

About the company Magic Leap, many of you have probably never heard of. We once wrote about her, but at that time no details was virtually no.

Soon on the market should get the first device of this company, so I decided to tell and show you what it is and why, most likely, it will be a revolution.

So, Magic Leap is a fairly young company founded only eight years ago. The first information in the media about her appeared in the autumn of 2014, when it became known that some previously unknown young company has already managed to collect more than $ 2 billion investment.

The thing was that until that moment, Magic Leap hasn’t shown any demo video, no prototype, no slides, nothing. Only with the first publication, a number of images, and it became clear that the company works on a device with augmented reality.

Then there were several publications, the company continued to raise money, but at least some clarity came with the first video. Here it is:

However, it turned out that in this video the actual schedule is slightly embellished. But after there was already a real video with a headset, which, despite its simplicity, demonstrated main feature of the product.

A feature of this is that the headset is not simply applies the image to real objects. She realizes the three-dimensional structure of the environment and takes account of it, which is clearly seen on the robot, hiding behind the leg of the table.

And then there are the technical details. The head of the Magic Leap said that the technology underlying the headset is radically different from anything that’s out there in the consumer market. If any headset uses augmented reality to project an image screen or glass, the device Magic Leap is supposedly projecting the image directly onto the retina of the eye. The company especially cooperated with neuroscientists, as a feature of the technology makes the projected image is practically indistinguishable from reality. It is not about the graphics level, and that the brain will react to virtual images as well as real.

And here at the end of last year, Magic Leap has finally unveiled his creation. Initially, the head of the company promised that the headset can be worn without worrying about your appearance, but the result was… a bit wrong.

The device consists of three separate elements: the headset called Lightwear, the computer unit Lightpack, which connects to the headset via a wire, and controller.

Magic Leap said that the underlying technology is called Digital Lightfield. She “mixes” digital light and real, and based on the concept of the light field, but more clearly I tell you about this, unfortunately, will not tell, as this needs to be a physicist.

The technology used, allows Magic Leap to realize something that had never been done before. First, virtual objects will “interact” with the real and to take them into account. Second, virtual objects will “see” is real.

In my opinion, Magic Leap has chosen the right strategy positioning. She orients their offspring in the first place for games and other entertainment. And then, as I think she has a better chance than Microsoft with its “professional” positioning HoloLens.

By the way, today, Magic Leap has released another series of his programmes in which employees talk about the technologies and other things. In particular, there was a new demonstration.

And it became known that the basis of the headset (rather, the computer unit) is SoC Nvidia Tegra X2. Interestingly that on this platform, previously nothing was known. It is likely that she designed specifically for Magic Leap. Though not from scratch. Judging by the description, it is based on SoC Parker, which showed that in 2016, only the configuration is slightly different.

In particular, X2 is a Tegra dual-core CPU, where two Cortex-A57 cores and one core Denver Nvidia’s own design. And as a GPU — the core of the Pascal generation with 256 CUDA units! In the end, the performance of the original SoC Parker reached 1.5 TFLOPS. Usually, when calculating this parameter is only taken into account the GPU, and it just migrated to the Tegra X2 unchanged. So if I’m right, platform at Magic Leap and a half times more powerful than the Tegra X1, which is inside Nintendo Switch.

In addition, probably, is not the only computing platform headset. Theoretically, there should be a special data processor, which will work exclusively with the formation of the light field. At least, HoloLens has the usual CPU, and a special holographic processor.

On the market Magic Leap needs to come out before the end of the summer. Prices yet, but talking about 1000 dollars or less. In the US it will be exclusive to AT&T and the rest of the world is unclear. Also, while there is no data about the starting lineup of projects, because to release the product without the games and pointless.

If Magic Leap will be exactly the way it is described and shown, it really is a revolution. Still, virtual reality is virtual (Yes, discovered America), but supplemented by — it is quite another matter. Especially when it is implemented as cool as Magic Leap.
