At the Earth’s orbit is an inflatable sculpture, but she can’t turn around

In December of 2018 booster Falcon 9 was sent into orbit inflatable sculpture of a diamond shape. It was expected that due to the reflection of sunlight will be visible from earth with the naked eye, but the creators still can’t give the satellite a command to the disclosure. The reason lies in the government shutdown, US artists need permission from the Federal communications Commission the FCC, but it doesn’t work. A tense situation emerged: due to the long stay in space sculpture can break, and people won’t be able to appreciate the beauty of the first ever space art object.

Космическая скульптура

The author of the project, the artist Trevor Paglen, created the sculpture with the support of the Nevada Museum of art and had spent $ 1.5 million. The design of the size of a football field made of light material and coated with titanium dioxide, the reflective properties of which are large enough for the sculpture could be seen from earth. According to the designer, he wanted to give people the opportunity to take a new look at the starry sky and think about my place in the Universe and of life on Earth.

Like every other person who intends to bring something into Earth orbit, the artist had to get permission from the FCC and follow special regulations. To his regret, the communications Commission of the United States is not able to give him the green light. The artist is concerned that the design can fail:

Every time the satellite emerges into the sunlight, it heats up, and then, in the shadow of the Earth, shrinks from the cold. If this process is allowed to continue for too long, it can damage the electronics, explained Trevor Paglen.

The fact that many companies and artists are too interested in sending glowing objects in earth orbit, it is very annoying astronomers. Light pollution can prevent researchers to explore space objects and simply to deliver people uncomfortable. We recently wrote about the Russian project on creation of satellites to show the “space” of advertising and even took a comment from its author. He is sure that his idea never hurt anyone.
