April 2007, unknown Mac Pro…

Officially announced was nothing. There was not even a press release. From time to time in the online store added or removed any of the options in the Configurator, and now, 4 April 2007, in the list of suggested variants of processors there is another…

The fourth radio button in the list of available processors was entitled “3 GHz Quad Core Xeon X5365 x2”. This option adds to the price of 1 500 dollars, but the reason was more than valid: 8 cores, 3 GHz each. As Pushkin: “kernel – pure emerald.”

Option impressive, but the price of the complex immediately went beyond the permitted amount, and the choice of processor was the very first option of two or three dozen, many of them the “default” was offered completely indecent things. For example, a Gigabyte of RAM for a workstation pre-loaded with Mac OS 10.4.9 is not even funny. RAM we’ll be back.

To nearly five million possible configurations, and added another million. The press service of Apple was a great episode: one click on the radio button you can turn the already powerful Mac Pro the “fastest Mac ever”, it was possible to confirm the test results. A reason was not used. Weird?

But it’s not the most amazing oddity “configuration on the fourth button”…

Stationery option Think Different

The model ID of the first Mac Pro introduced in August 2006 at the opening of WWDC – MacPro1,1. “Configuration at the fourth button,” the model ID was… MacPro2,1. It’s minor, like, fact… has caused confusion.

IDs model appeared simultaneously with the New World ROM in the late 90s, in the era of “Apple perestroika”, when you identify and resolve the absurdity of it was fashionable. Prior to that, on a program question “where am I?”, the system returned a Gestalt, a 16-bit number designating the type and modification of the Mac. It’s also hardware reported person – for example, 6878.

New World ROM introduced a convenient notation for code and for people. String without spaces, consisting of three parts:
species name (MacMini, PowerMac, etc.), sometimes generic (Powerbook is a PowerBook and and iBook);
the number that (outside of Apple) considered the designation of “generation” of the computer, but not only: the number “6” following the “Powerbook” meant or iBook, or PowerBook with a 12-inch screen, “almost iBook”,“2” and “4” was used to denote iBook’s previous generations;
a number indicating the version or modification (Powerbook5,2 and Powerbook5,3 were 15 – and 17-inch variations on the same version of the PowerBook.

For owners MacPro2,1 it was an important practical question: does one or the other graphics card (or card for PCI Express) with the model of “another generation”? And generation or is it something else?

More. LGA 771, CPU socket in the first Mac Pro was compatible not only with 51хх Xeon (Woodcrest), but with a new 4-core Xeon 53хх (Clovertown). Someone in Apple had the idea to paste in LGA 771 4-core Intel Xeon 5365 – work. And, as Steve said, “boom” – a new option, the fastest Mac ever…

This is absolutely the same computer with a different processor. In fact, it was a different processor (Quad instead of a Duo), so MacPro1,1 with this processor was MacPro2,1. Compatibility with extensions? In MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 are the same PCI Express 1.1 and 32-bit EFI.

The base Mac Pro configuration was not a configuration but a provocation. In supermarkets, departments constantly moving from place to place, cause customers a lot of inconvenience, but increase the turnover. While looking for where she moved toys or some kind of polka dot, will pass the whole establishment, and where something will take…

Decided to get a Mac Pro, when Apple promised a price of 2 499 $ (without taxes and shipping) looking through the option for the option, was forced instead of the default choose something else, almost always more expensive.

It was possible to replace the standard pair of processors with a clock frequency of 2.66 GHz on a cheaper (and less appetizing) a couple of 2.0 GHz. This lowered the price to $ 300.

Given in decent condition configuration (c 2.66 GHz) cost about 3 000, if the scope of the purchased computer does not require prohibitively expensive graphics cards with 512 Megabytes of video memory.

The basic package included 1 GB PC5300 DDR2 ECC (FB-DIMM) 667 MHz. This was humiliating enough. Of the 8 slots (in two banks) 2 were busy with the modules of 512 Megabytes. Onlineshop “knew” about modules in 2 GB, although beyond the modules in 4 GB hasn’t been uncommon.

In our online shop you can raise the RAM to 16 Gigabytes, and even up to 32 Gigabytes.

4 HDD (SATA II with data transfer rate up to 3GB/s), one of which was occupied by the disk 250 GB (7 200 rpm). In my opinion – not enough.

The store was allowed to put all four drives 750 GB (7 200 rpm).

MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 are almost identical, I will not repeat.

It was worth the increase performance an extra 700 dollars (the difference between the Mac Pro with two 2-core Intel Xeon 5160 with 3.0 GHz and a Mac Pro with two 4-core Intel Xeon 5365 with the same clock speed)?

In Geekbench 2 the 8-core Mac Pro (Xeon 5365) were recruited in 32-bit tests 9 239 points, in 64-bit 10 835.

4-core Mac Pro (Xeon 5160) – 5 788 (32), 6 577 (64).

Productivity growth – x1,6 and x1,65!
