A dual-processor Mac Pro 2009

In my opinion, the “main dish” great upgrade all desktop Macs 3 Mar 2009 they were: Mac Pro, each of which had two Quad-core processor Gainestown/Nehalem. Their power and the price was fascinated (and in the world raged the most terrible crisis of the new Millennium)…

How many were sold Mac Pro model ID MacPro4,1, I do not know. Not millions of pieces, their target audience is not so large as the cheap domestic machines or gadgets. It is only known that sales exceeded expectations. In the first days after their appearance in the online store, dramatically (ten times) increase in the number of visits to these pages – but a rare visitor clicked the “Buy”button.

Among bought was the scientists who were going to expose the Mac Pro is dangerous for his well-being tests (like some kind of iPod or iPhone), to pass through the tests and, ideally, bring the Apple to clean water. But pricey “grater for cheese” (Cheese Grater) did not disappoint their own company.

A dual-processor Mac Pro sample in 2009, with the highest clock frequency available, the results of the different tests really showed outstanding results. It was the fastest Mac in their entire history. A few days after the publication of the results of independent studies Mac Pro have increased. Then more often, then had to urgently order the parts and increase the time of the order.

Whether Apple newborn company, desperately trying to survive in a crisis, it would be her finest hour…

This is the sixth part series about the Mac Pro. Links to previous parts of the series here:

Compare the cheapest dual-processor configurations in 2008 and 2009

All dual-processor options were presented in the online store of one starting configuration, which was also very cheap: only 3 $ 299.

Part of the initial configuration includes a pair of Intel Quad Core Xeon E5520 “Gainestown/Nehalem” processor with a clock frequency of 2.26 GHz.

The cheapest dual-processor variant of the previous model cost 2 799 dollars, it used a pair of Intel Quad Core Xeon E5462 “Harpertown/Penryn” processor with a clock frequency of 2.8 GHz. The same processor was used in only a uniprocessor version of MacPro3,1.

Looks defiant: a computer with a clock frequency of the dual processors in the 2.26 GHz is worth $ 500 more expensive than a computer with a pair of processors with a clock frequency of 2.8 GHz. Moreover, the first cache and at least arranged in a strange way, but some undignified.

Before you can understand the details, we simply compare.

In Geekbench 2, two groups of tests – 32-bit and 64-bit, marked (32) and (64). Geekbench 4 test groups also two, one of them tested the performance of a single core (SC), the other the performance of all cores (MC). In all results, the larger the value, the better.

Geekbench 2:

Mac Pro with Harpertown/Penryn is MacPro3,1: (32) = 9 162, (64) = 10 564.
Mac Pro c Gainestown/Nehalem, it MacPro4,1: (32) = 11 864, (64) = 13 363.

The superiority of the Nehalem – 1.29 and 1.26 times.

Geekbench 4:

Mac Pro with Harpertown/Penryn: (SC) = 1 853, (MC) = 8 973.
Mac Pro c Gainestown/Nehalem: (SC) = 1 994, (MC) = 11 701.

The superiority of 1.08 and 1.30 times.

That is, the new “cheapest” dual-processor Mac Pro cost 1.18 times more expensive than its predecessor and in three of the four series of tests were superior to the predecessor’s performance is more than 1.18 times. In one series – less than 1.18 times.

At least not slower…

The device cache in Nehalem

In processors generation Nehalem used in the MacPro4,1 (Bloomfield/Nehalem and Gainestown/Nehalem) size of second level cache changes… kilobytes. For each kernel its own second level cache size of 256 kilobytes.

There is still a cache of the third level, “common to all processor cores”, in size of 8 Megabytes.

About this oddity had to write in a previous article – but better late than never.

Basic configuration

In the basic configuration, pair Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.26 GHz (E5520) “Gainestown/Nehalem”, working in close cooperation with each other.

Thanks to HyperThreading, 8 physical cores actually behave like virtual 16.

Turbo Boost clock rate of active cores increases up to 2.53 GHz, while all others are switched off.

The data transfer speed QuickPath Interconnect in the basic version, with Quad Core Xeon 2.26 GHz (E5520) – 5,86 GT/s (Gigatransfer per second).

RAM PC3-8500 DDR3 ECC SDRAM (1066 MHz). In the basic configuration, 6 GB, busy 6 slots of the 8. Maximum RAM, according to Apple, 32 GB. Actually, Mac OS X supported on computers of this model up to 96 Gigabytes of RAM.

In dual-processor variants MacPro4,1 two banks of RAM and 8 slots.

Everything else – supports hard drives, communication ports (their number and location on the body), optical disc drives, PCI Express, communication, graphic processors and the like – the same as in the uniprocessor versions MacPro4,1.

Options

In the Configurator for dual-processor Mac Pro (Early 2009) suggested two other pairs of processors. Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.66 GHz (Х5550) and Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.93 GHz (Х5570).

The data transfer speed QuickPath Interconnect (QPI), in both cases increased up to 6.4 GT/s.

The option of Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.66 GHz (Х5550) was worth 4 699 dollars, the option of Intel Quad Core Xeon 2.93 GHz (Х5570) – 5 $ 899.

Justified whether these options your price? Judge for yourself.

Mac Pro with two Quad Core Xeon 2.66 GHz (Х5550): (32) = 14 317, (64) = 16 093.
Mac Pro with two Quad Core Xeon 2.93 GHz (Х5570): (32) = 15 572, (64) = 17 619.

Geekbench 4:

Mac Pro with two Quad Core Xeon 2.66 GHz (Х5550): (SC) = 2 332, (MC) = 13 605.
Mac Pro with two Quad Core Xeon 2.93 GHz (Х5570): (SC) = 2 468, (MC) = 14 096.
