27-inch iMac Haswell and graphics for laptops. What goes wrong?

Its 27-inch ancestor in the past year, 2012, was surprised and almost angered by the expert community: why to reduce weight (and thickness) of a desktop computer? Did the developers desktop “all-in-one” at least one real reason to bring such sacrifices? In 2013, Apple answered this question: now in the “very sleek” in the world (this is not my statement, this quote from one of the PC-edition), again without real reason was the Intel Core fourth generation.

Before the transition to the next generation of processors, boosting performance, and was absolutely necessary – otherwise the gap drop in sales and renaming the Apple in the Apple Services. I’m exaggerating a bit, but…

The main goals of the creators Haswell (cost and schedule) for the 27-inch iMac’s was irrelevant. Reducing energy consumption is more and less heat, but in a 27-inch Ah iMac’2012 this everything was fine.

And the problem the integrated graphics of relationship to computers using exclusively discrete graphics cards are not, in principle. By the way, to choice most of these cards also have a question, but more on that later.

As a result of using Haswell, the performance increased. 15-20% max. In some cases, the increase was even more insignificant.

What is all this?

Touch interfaces and Retina-displays in computers “all-in-one”

The 2013 review updated the iMac gone of the complaints of lack of support of the fashion trends of the computer market. In some places they met, but authors of such reviews have peck in the comments (arguments, not as some others).

What was said about touch interfaces on vertically arranged displays still Steve, in the already distant year 2010 has finally reached the users and buyers who have tried these wonders in practice.

The idea to extend the touch interface on ordinary personal computers could not come into the heads of the engineers involved in these interfaces for several years, from morning to night – just imagine how it could be cool!

On the virtual drawing boards were born mobile devices with this interface, it was assumed that they will coexist with computers classical scheme (window-mouse-keyboard). That is, the number of fundamentally different interfaces will be doubled. To multiply entities unnecessarily should not – and does this need?

Steve the idea is not liked, but, nevertheless, he did not reject it. Asking the author some questions, demanded to thoroughly examine the consequences of its implementation, and all conclusions to test, carefully.

In the pilot workshops it was not the first device with capacitive touch screen. Put together a program of experiments was attracted to him (having selected a subscription about nondisclosure) employees from different divisions of the company, among them was my friend – now it is not a secret, personally Steve opened it in 2010.

The result is known. In addition, the consultations had been attracted by scientists in the field of ergonomics. The question was closed: it does NOT work.

When working with a vertically mounted screen of the hand there is no support, it very quickly leads to fatigue, which increases rapidly to unacceptable values. The instrument of torture.

The question was closed. I doubt that those who approved the development of touch interfaces for computers “all-in-one”, didn’t know about it. Silicon valley – a huge village, where it is impossible to keep even the most confidential projects. But the prospect of this make good money was too attractive to think about this kind of stuff.

Want, would be to hop on Board and buy, and to claim that “it was.”

And Retina for desktops be a little more difficult. Harm from its implementation on the same iMac would not. Although it was experimentally confirmed that at a distance of 50 centimeters from the screen (recommended for use with desktops) normal size pixels are practically invisible. Laptops and mobile devices is a completely different case. Besides, imagine the technical side of the question.

Standard screen resolution on 27-inch iMac is 2560×1440. Multiply both parts of it into two: 5120×2880. The number of pixels in this case would rise to 15 million with “tail”. This is three times more than the number of pixels in the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

That is, on the one hand, this doubling is not necessary, with another – it is technically difficult. On this issue, however, continued to work. The results have been far from ideal.

Initial configurations and processors

Online store updated iMac 27-inch (68.58 cm) was represented by two initial configurations, 1 1 799, and $ 999.

The most attractive configuration consisted of less powerful components, but no it wasn’t the worst of its shortcomings: its in the Configurator, the number of options could be counted on the fingers of one hand. It was possible to increase the amount of RAM, instead of the standard hard disk of 1 TB (7 200 rpm) to choose something else (in number of options – hard disk with larger capacity two options Fusion Drive and SSD options several different capacities), choose Magic Mouse or Magic TrackPad (no fees), or both of them ($69).

There was something else, a less significant stuff, but even they were few.

For configuration 1 for $ 999, in addition, offered a core i7 processor with a higher clock frequency and higher performance and more powerful graphics card, with 4 Gigabytes of VRAM (GDDR5).

In configuration 1 799 dollars used 4-Core Intel Core i5 3.2 GHz (i5-4570), Haswell, 6 MB cache third level, accelerates to 3.6 GHz when the load concentrates on one of its cores and do not support HyperThreading. In other words, 4 his kernel did not play 8 virtual.

Configuration for 1 $ 999 revived a 4-core Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz (i5-4670), with the same cache size the third level (6 Megabytes) max dynamic clock speed of 3.8 GHz without HyperThreading support.

For $ 200, in the configuration 1 of 999 $ it was possible to replace the processor on a 4-core Intel Core i7 3.5 GHz (i7-4771), cache in the third level 8 MB, overclocking in turbo mode to 3.9 GHz and HyperThreading (four physical cores into eight virtual). True experts do not advise to spend on this upgrade money because the performance gain was small.

27-inch iMac, the processor was not soldered to the motherboard. To install used socket LGA 1150. Accurate data about upgrading the processor to something more powerful, compatible with this connector, I have no – I only know that there were such cases, and even successful.

But for this it was necessary to tear from the body’s fragile screen Assembly glass, protective coatings and a liquid crystal display (Assembly tightly glued to the body), and then paste it back on, risking anything to damage.

Apple has officially reported about impossibility of self-storage upgrade, but about the ability to upgrade processors in General silent. Nothing personal, it’s business, most users (and some browsers) to see Apple bans seriously, and tried to pack the bought the iMac with the stock, just in case, before you exit online store. And of course, not the cheapest configuration.

Heard whether you satisfied the ringing of the cash register?

Graphics from laptops

In option 1 799 installed graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, with one Gigabyte of GDDR5. The designation of the modification, the plaintext letter “M” this map is designed for the “average” laptop, not even for large.

Whether the beauty of such victims? The graphics subsystem copes with a wide range of tasks, pulling up to two external displays with resolution up to 2560 x 1600 pixels, without strain and overheating. But for those suffering from compulsive gambling that was not an option. To replace it with something more powerful in the cheaper configuration was impossible.

Part of the initial configuration for the 1 999 dollars included NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M, 2 Gigabytes GDDR5. For $ 150 it can be replaced by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4 gigs of the same RAM.

In desktop graphics for desktop computers would be more appropriate but in the most successful competitors are the 27-inch iMac also used the graphics card for laptops. What to be computers all-in-one iMac was determined.

Something else

The set of connectors on the back side of the case was the same as last year’s model.

Connectors:

First Thunderbolt, in two copies. Apple is able to negotiate with Intel the price of the chips Thunderbolt 2 in October.

Wi-Fi 802.11 ac with a theoretical transfer speed of 1.3 GB/s. This Protocol someone even called “wireless Ethernet”. But in reality, the wireless speed though, and has grown – but Ethernet she was far away. Even in ideal conditions.
