11-inch MacBook Air (Mid 2013): what I know not all

For the first time in my memory of home the MacBook even in the weakest configuration seemed to be a very serious machine. In size it was slightly more than the iPad, and cost only $ 200 more expensive (with the same amount of flash memory inside), but it was a Shared computer… with the iPad it was even larger than it seemed at first glance, but our topic is not the case.

This is the ninth part of a series about the MacBook Air. Links to previous parts below:

In the online store, the novelty was represented by two initial configurations for the 1 999 and $ 199. They differed only by the amount of flash memory. Externally, the novelty is almost no different from previous 11-inch MacBook Air in the shell with a wedge-shaped cross-section.

The same display as before, with the same resolution of 1366×768 pixels. In June 2012, the display was criticized to the nines – even then it was anachronistic, but Apple has ignored the criticism, and nothing bad happened. He was and remained the sales leader in its class.

For a screen with a diagonal of 11.6 inches (29.5 cm) this is perfect. Retina display would be even better, but it would have to sacrifice the beautiful price of $ 999.

The rest, almost everything has changed.

Intel Core i5 1.3 GHz (i5-4250U), Haswell ULT.

Graphics – Intel HD Graphics 5000, reserving for their needs 1 Gigabyte of total RAM. But that’s not all: in Mac OS 10.9.3 and higher graphics began demanding 1.5 Gigabytes of shared memory.

Cache third level is 3 MB, 22 nm technology, Turbo Boost 2.0 clock speed is automatically increased to 2.6 GHz. DMI was replaced by OPI (On Package Interface) connecting CPU with the chipset directly built into the chip.

The developers of the Core architecture of the fourth generation there were two priority objectives: reducing energy consumption and improving writing skills are integrated into the processor graphics. Both objectives were achieved.

By various contrivances the power consumption was drastically reduced – from-for what the battery life of the MacBook Air with 11-inch diagonal increased to 9 hours (according to official figures). Official data lie?

Yes. In fact, at a typical computers this size loads (messaging, browsing websites, reading e-books), he is kept longer.

I wonder what the duration of “on one tank” they promised would be if Steve had not implemented in “a fair test of the battery capability”. 20 hours?

Memory – PC3-12800 (1,600 MHz) LPDDR3 SDRAM. “LP” means the power consumption is reduced. Still LPDDR and LPDDR2 Apple used only in mobile devices. Another reason for the increase in battery life.

According to tradition, the RAM tightly vpisalis into the motherboard.

For the first time in Macs the new MacBook Air was used PCIe SSDS. Officially update flash memory was declared impossible. Actually it was possible and even relatively easy.

Configuration and some options

Initial configurations, as we have said, had two. They differed with the volume of flash memory: configuration for $ 999 it was 128 GB (as in modifications of the fourth generation iPad for $ 799, added in January 2013) in the configuration 1 199 $ 256 Gigabytes.

In configuration 1 for $ 199 instead of the SSD volume of 256 GB, for a fee of $ 300, you could install the SSD to 512 GB.

In a cheap configuration, this option was not.

But in the configurators of both configurations was the option of choosing a more powerful processor, Intel Core i7 1.7 GHz (i7-4650U), cache in the third level 4 Mbytes and a maximum clock frequency of 3.3 GHz. Of course, also Haswell ULT.

The two initial configurations consisted of 4 Gigabytes of RAM, the extra $ 100 you can order the installation of 8 GB. The selected RAM size change was absolutely impossible.

Connectors and communications

The connectors were the same as the previous model: the port of Thunderbolt the first version, which (officially) supported Daisy chaining of two external monitors with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 each.

In addition, the case had two USB 3.0 connectors, headphone Jack and MagSafe 2.

Dual microphone (with noise reduction feature, as the iPhone 5), and the built-in FaceTime HD camera (720p).

11 – and 13-inch MacBook Air 2013 was the first AMI Mac with support for 802.11 ac.
